Does anyone know if there are taxis lined up when the Washington DC train arrives at 11:48PM? Also, how much can one expect to pay from there to Oakland?

Normally taxis aren't lined up in Pittsburgh. Usually you'll have to call the cab company and wait for one. The taxi demand is relatively small here.

Taxi do sit over at the Greyhound station on 11th Street 1/2 block from Amtrak....where Amtrak is located there's no room for taxi's to stand on Liberty Avenue.

1 Pittsburgh doesn't have enough Amtrak service to warrant cabs to stand there

2 Pittsburgh Cab scene is growing but nowhere like you find in the larger cities of the East Coast.

Again Cabs will stand where there's more regular service pulling in and out, Greyhound station, the Convention Center with Megabus and of course the Airport.

Taxis do line up at the hotels downtown.

I don't know if any stalk the Amtrak station, but the Westin Convention Center hotel is a block away. You could walk over there and find one if there are none at the station when you arrive and you don't want to call and wait.

and the ridership that is there largely comes in on the 8 pm Pennsylvanian. the station is staffed so I'm sure Amtrak personel would be happy to call a cab.

As an occasional rider of that train, I can tell you that there's usually one or two (but sometimes none or sometimes just a jitney), so try to be quick out of the gate. If not, though, you can always program the cab company's number into your phone and give a call when you arrive or a little bit before you arrive and they'll dispatch someone. I certainly wouldn't worry about it.

Here is a link to find your estimated fare:

Usually there are a pretty fair number of cabs in town at the hotels, particularly on weekdays.

It shouldn't be that difficult to get several cabs to respond if they know the train is in- it certainly wasn't when I was driving 15 years ago.

Thank you - it's for my college freshman son - maybe that's why I appear overly concerned!

There's often a jitney. I used to pay them $15 to go to Squirrel Hill. If your son is going to be taking the train regularly, he should get a jitney driver's number and call him when he travels. I had one for years, but I've since lost my Rolodex that had the jitney drivers' numbers.

Anyplace in Oakland where taxis will sit? Btw, the google map reviews for Yellow Cab are terrible - full of stories of cabs not showing up.
