thank for all the input!
i have chked out East End, i am assuming that is shayside, squirrel hill area? and fox chapel. i think it's too far for my poor hubby. It would be convenient for me but poor him ;p

I think we will stick to north allegheny and cranberry (still not sure which). Based on the real estate available I liike Wexford. but that is only internet so don't know for sure til i get there and see it.

Base on location cranberry wins for commute and conveniece for day to day errands.

QUESTION: I only have 3 days in my next visit.

1. WHERE should I go/tour to get a good feel of the NA school district area (McCandless, Marshall etc)? do they have a downtown or is it very scattered?

2. Which Road/route would be the best commute for my hubby (rt 8, 79?)

thx

No downtown--it is the epitomy of the suburbs. (that is not a put down because I love the area)
I would simply drive around that whole area. (it all got mixed up in my mind when I first moved here nearly 3 years ago) Just and FYI for school district..Pine-Richland is also very good and is intermingled all along NA, Hampton, and Cranberry.
Commute: Depends where you choose. I only live a couple miles from route 8 and take that into Butler. If you are close to 79 that would be the way to go--exit off on the (I believe) Evans City exit. Both commutes are super easy as you are going against traffic. I love my commute compared to when I was having to drive into Pittsburgh.

I suggest researching and being aware of how the taxes differ between counties. We pay over 600.00 a month in real estate taxes for a house that is middle of the road for the area. And this may be getting much worse in the next few years. We are currently debating on heading a few miles down the road to Butler because of that.

There is alot more places to live in besides than right in Butler, there are some very nice places in and around Butler but there is people that will say other wise, yes there has been more of a rise in drug crimes but that is everywhere you go now, but Cranberry area is the more higher end area and they do have alot nice homes but there other areas and towns around Butler just pull out a map and you will see alot of nice little towns to live in, then check here Real Estate Listings, Homes for Sale and Rental Property Listings – REALTOR.com® they have alot of listings of some beautiful homes.Check into homes in Grove City north of Butler.
Now you being non-white is not a problem it is pretty laid back,we don't care about that ,and Butler Hospital is a good hospital to work it is doing alot of expansion and is a great place to be.
Pittsburgh is a great place to go on a weekend outing and is the most affordable pro baseball games Pirates and you have the Steelers and the Penguins hockey team, the strip district is cool to go shopping, Kennywood Park is a great place to have fun, it is one of the nicest amusement parks around for all ages it looks like a city park with rides in it. then you have the River Regatta every summer ,plus butler has the Butler Farm show which is great especially if you have young children.
One thing about the Butler area is this ,it may not have high class entertainment but it does have alot of history and alot of stuff to see and do, you can easily find something different to do every week.
Good Luck and welcome to Western PA

hi all

we are flying in next week. i have a community tour lined up, school tours, homes in North allegheny and cranberry area, hampton/mar/pine ;p very exciting!!!

since my hubby will be "working" i will be there exploring on my own, i'll bring the kids on next trip if this 2nd interview is a success.

any places i should hit!? which malls, cafes, dinners?
Any place that is safe to hang while i wait for hubby to be done, he is over at butler hospital. they are lodging us in cranberry again. this time i would have access to the car.

also how should i pack? how dressy is the area? what is appropriate for dinners? is it still snowing?

thanks

Super warm winter clothes. Casual, casual, casual, casual and more casual.

Bring one semi-casual outfit if you plan to go to a nice restaurant or someone's house for dinner.

Bring one warm dress---wool---if you plan to go to a more upscale place. Don't knock yourself out with evening wear unless you are going to a special event.

I wouldn't waste a moment worrying about dressing too casual in Pittsburgh---especially in this weather.

Pittsburghers are very laid back people. Your idea of casual is probably considered dressy to many so you'll be dressed perfectly for almost anything.

Yes, it's still snowing.

Should still be warmer next week, though. Highs up into the 40s and maybe some rain in on Thurs/Fri and through the weekend. Weather forecasts are not always accurate past a few days out, but here's hoping. I saw a high temp of 50 coming up about 2 weeks from now. If you're coming early next week you'll even get some sunny days with any luck.

It's hardly wierd to have snow in January. Pittsburgh's snow does tend to come and go, though. It's not like the midwest.
