I'll be attending night classes Downtown that let out at 9:30pm, and I have about a six-block walk to my bus stop after that, plus however long I have to wait for the bus (as much as half an hour, most likely). Will I (a small, 20yo female) be safe walking alone downtown at night?

I need to know specifically where you will be walking from and where you'll be catching your bus before I can answer your question about safety with any type of certainty.

If you're not comfortable posting details publicly, send me a private message.

Generally it is safe. Just be aware of your surroundings. It also doesn't hurt to find a fellow classmate on your first night and walk with them.

Just use common sense. Use the main heavily traveled routes. Avoid short cuts. Stay away from alley ways. Stand at the more 'crowded' bus stops. Keep some mace in your coat pocket for those 'just in case' moments. You'll be alright.

It's really not dangerous downtown, but you need to use common sense as you would in all urban areas.

Some streets are more populated than others at that time of the night. Find those. Stay on them even if it's a longer route.

If you're attending Duquesne, you should familiar yourself with the area during daylight. You don't want to wander down a street and find yourself in an isolated area.

Downtown is dead at night. You will probably be the only one on the streets. I have never had a problem down there.

It's not that dead. I know people who attend Duquesne and take the bus from Pittsburgh.

When I've been downtown, Liberty Avenue has always been crowded. It just depends on if there are events.

I'm sure tumble weeds are blowing through there in the winter though. Only people who MUST be downtown would be on those windy cold streets at night.

Totally depends on where you are in town. The cultural district is usually fairly populated (less so in the wintertime, I'm sure, since who wants to be outside in this miserable cold) and buzzing in the evenings. Now, if you're closer to the Boulevard of the Allies side of town, it is much much quieter and deserted.

I'm usually pretty chill about urban crime issues, but my one exception is that I don't think it is a terribly good idea for women to walk around alone at night. That said, Downtown isn't going to be a particularly bad place to do that (I just don't like it as a general rule).

Like Hopes said, give us the school and bus stop location and we can give you a more specific answer and route to take. BTW, I like your user name. Is that a reference to the song by The Smiths called Panic?
