I was wondering if anyone knew of some great places to buy slate tile.

I've been to Home Depot (prices range per SF from $2.89 to $3.38 and up.)

I'd like a little more selection. Plus, I've heard that Home Depot's prices are actually higher than independent type suppliers.

If you want to do your part for recycling, Construction Junction may have some stuff that has been salvaged. Otherwise, you could try Molyneax (sp?), Larry Lint or some other local flooring provider. Don't know where you live so you'd have to search in that area for your options.

There's a place called Tile and Design Center (I think that's the name) at the corner of Ellsworth and Spahr in Shadyside. Lots of selection.

Another tile-specific place: Accent On Tile, Liberty Ave across from Church Brew Works. Can't speak to slate; we got some ceramic there for the office kitchen. (The kitchen in here is nicer than the one in my house!)

ceramiche in the west end has great selection, but i don't know how their prices compare to the big box stores.

construction junction is great when they have what you want, but you never know if they'll have something you like and have enough of it, especially when it comes to tile.

Was just going to mention that place, just because I drove by and went "Oh yeah, that place". Right across from Wright Pontiac (well, I guess just Wright GMC now, no more Pontiac....) Looked it up, it's a chain in the northeast apparently.

Building Supply Company on 23rd Street In Sharspburg. Just as you enter Sharpsburg from Aspinwall, go right on 23rd, it is one block on the right.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone!

Nuwaver, I remember that place from my boy scout camp mommy days. Thanks for reminding me!

there's also a stoneyard in sharpsburg that reportedly has good prices, although i've never been. i don't know if a stoneyard would carry stone tile though.
