Hey all! I am originally from Northwestern PA and have spent some time in Pittsburgh but it's been many, many years. I have lived in Columbus, OH for the past decade. My husband is considering a position with a company located in Canonsburg and therefore we are checking out our options for relocating.

We have a small family and would like to rent a townhome/duplex/house as opposed to an apartment in a complex. We like older neighborhoods and homes, not really into prefab communities (not that there is anything wrong with them, they are just not for us). My oldest daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall so a decent school distract is desirable.

It would be nice to find a place where:

- We would have access to public transportation
- There are sidewalks and parks for walking the dog
- A "neighborhood" feel
- Older architecture

We are hoping to locate a place with approximately a 30 minute commute to Canonsburg but I am not sure what to expect with traffic, etc. I am looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

Probably Mt. Lebanon or Dormont would be your best bet. Stay on the southern side of Pittsburgh. You can find many towns like you described, close to the T to get into the city, and still have your older neighborhood feel. You probably wouldn't want to go on any other side of Pittsburgh if you are commuting south to Canonsburg everyday.

Mt Lebanon has a excellent school district, and everything you decribed.

Ok, what is your budget? Also, will you have a car? If your husband needs public transportation to get to his job in Canonsburg then you're in some trouble. This is a very suburban community and I don't think they have any public transportation there, but I believe they do have a private bus shuttle to Pittsburgh. If he will be driving to work, but you still want to be near public transportation, then I'd suggest South Park, Bethel Park, or Mt. Lebanon. All have excellent schools, all are a 10 min drive to 79, which goes right to Canonsburg, and all are on the T line, which can take you to south hills village mall or downtown. Mt. Lebanon is the only one with a real "neighborhood" feel to it, but all the areas are nice and South Park has a huge park. Also, I wouldn't characterize Mt. Lebanon as having an older feel to it, but that's just my opinion....and it doesn't really have much architecture. For a place like that you're going to have to move into the city, but then your husband would have a much worse commute and you'd have to private school your daughter. You are probably going to have to make a tradeoff.

We only have one car which my husband will use for the commute. I was hoping to have access to public transportation so I could have some mobility during the day.

As far as our budget for renting, we were hoping to pay between $750 - $1000.
