Thumbs down How about live at the east end ave?

I will graduate soon and need to move out from the university's apartment. I checked several apartments at the east end ave. They are close to the Frick Park. However, I know little about that area. Is it safe to live? We need to park the car on the street. Is the neighborhood good in that area? Where could I check some data about that place?

By the way, one of the landlords told me that the place is out of Pittsburgh city then it only pays 1% city tax instead of 3% as living in Pittsburgh.

Thank you in advance for your kind response.

What is the exact area called? Edgewood? Is the street really called East End Avenue? We'll be able to help you out if you give us specifics?

^ East End Ave is one block east from Braddock Ave and runs from Penn Ave to Allenby Ave in Edgewood (almost I-376). So the northern part of the street is in the Park Place neighborhood of Pittsburgh, it looks nice but is close to the rougher areas of Wilkinsburg and Homewood, while the southern part is right into the Regent Square area (the street itself has parts in Pittsburgh, Wilkinsburg and Edgewood). On the northern end, there's the East End Food Co-op on the corner of Braddock and Penn, which has fresh produce and the like in a (slightly) hippie atmosphere. On the southern end there's the movie theater and a few nice bars and cafes (including D's and the Square Cafe) in Regent Square. I'll actually be living in that neighborhood from August on, so I've made quite a bit of research and spent a lot of time in that neighborhood.

Overall I'd say it depends on what your benchmark is (think Squirrel Hill vs. Oakland vs. the Hill District) but unless you're really close to Penn Ave, East End Ave looks like a nice street, without much crime spillover from parts north and east.

Thank you for taking time to explain. The property of interest locates in the intersetion of East End Ave. and Biddle Ave. From the map, The East End Ave is parrallel to S. Braddock and very close to the Frick park.

I do not know the line between Wikinsburgh and Edgewood. It seems that the apartment is in the middle for both.

It reads that Wikinsburgh and Edgewood and Homewood are not good neighborhoods. And the East End Ave area is surrounded by them but it is a nice street?

A general question. when I try to do some research on a neighborhood, is there any resource I could use, besides looking around the area and chatting with you guys?

Again, I really appreciated your kind help!

The entire area is a gem, I miss living there. I had an apartment near the corner of Braddock and Forbes for three years. Being so close to Frick Park and the Regent Square businesses is very convenient. The neighborhood is even nicer now that they've renovted the dump in Park Place into a coffee shop.

You are a few blocks from some not great areas but there is little crime in the area. Potential for crime is worse the further you go from Braddock.

By the way, it's Wilkinsburg (without the h, only Pittsburgh has that honor it seems). I don't know where you read that Edgewood was not a good neighborhood, it generally has higher real estate prices and is seen as a much more desirable area than many other eastern suburbs. As far as Wilkinsburg goes, it's a pretty large suburb and the western part of it (which borders Pittsburgh and is in the Regent Square neighborhood) is very different than its downtown or its northern part, which borders Homewood. Homewood is Pittsburgh's most crime-ridden neighborhood (parts of it at least). I wouldn't ever want to live there.

There is some neighborhood info on the City of Pittsburgh website; as far as other boroughs (such as Edgewood and Wilkinsburg) go, I don't know of a comprehensive source except perhaps the Allegheny County website, which will give you the usual descriptive statistics.

Did you read the links? They simply explain why Pittsburgh has an H.
