Did you know that you can go to a local farmers market in winter? And still buy lots of local food?
Earlier this month, I braved another snow squall to drive to the East Liberty Farmers Market, which is open from 5 a.m. to noon every Saturday in the yellow brick former stable and feedmill building where it started in 1941. While the market, which claims to be the city's oldest, has its regular customers, some of whom have been coming for decades, plenty of Western Pennsylvanians may not even know about it. the east lib market is definitely nice!

you can also get winter boxes from kretschmann farms, who do a csa in the summer.

New Year’s Greetings, (http://www.kretschmannfarm.com/Feb24box.htm - broken link)

it's too late to sign up for this week's box, obviously, but they'll be doing another in a couple of weeks.

$25 for 4 lbs of apples, 5 lbs of potatoes, 1 lb of carrots, 2 onions, 1 cabbage, a small bag of greens, some herbs, and a pound of sauerkraut. not bad, considering the fact that it's all local and organic! and they do neighborhood dropoffs all over the city.

Those hours are great if you had a crazy night on saturday and are hungry but nothing's open at 5am.
