i like the idea of restaurants in parks. in london, pretty much every large park has a cafe in it with outdoor seating and it's really nice to be able to go to the park and get something to eat or drink while you're there. i'm not sure if those cafes are private businesses or are run by the parks department.

i think most of the parks there are old estates (kind of like hartwood acres) so they tend to have manor houses or outbuildings to put cafes in. either that or they've been there forever, so they look very charming. the one thing i worry about with eatnpark is their aesthetic is not always that nice. although it's not like what's in schenley plaza now is all that beautiful to begin with; those kiosks are hideous.

Agreed -- but at least they're small? I dunno -- They have the permits already, so all we can do is wait and see. It'll probably be like anything else -- where nothing is ever as bad as we think it is, in the end.

Thanks for pointing that out, the original poster titled it Schenley Park.

No problem -- and while someone mentioned the plaza is part of the park (probably true technically), the Schenley Park scenario conjured up an image for me at first of like, an EnP next to Panther Hollow -- and wow, would that be a bizarre idea.

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I feel like it would be both crowded and an eyesore.
I'm not sure why it would be packed "wall-to-wall" in the first place with sunbathers when the much more spacious and serene Flagstaff Hill is 5 to 10 minutes away across the Schenley Bridge.

Certainly point taken... good luck trying to play frisbee or something at Schenley Plaza in the summer. Though with ample open green spaces in Schenley Park, that's not a tragedy.

Something along the lines of Six Penn would be fine with me.

By the way, the cafe at the Frick Art and Historical Center is exactly the sort of old estate building groar was describing.

Pittsburgh is all about mature and established areas. I for one vote that this university area be more for the students and faculty that live and work in that area. If this means preserving the space for 'catching rays' throwing the football or tossing the Frisbee, than go develop the rest of the city.

yes! i'd be ok with something like that anywhere in schenley park (or frick park, for that matter!)

here's the park cafe near my brother's place in london, in brockwell park. the rounded part is the entrance to the cafe and there are outside tables to the right of that. it used to be some fancy dude's summer house (lord brockwell, i presume!). it's on top of a hill in the middle of the park so it's a really nice place to sit and take in the scenery

suffice to say i don't think this eat n park thing will be nearly as cool.

Oakland is visited by tons of people. People going to the museums or libraries, events at Carnegie Music Hall, guests visiting Pitt or CMU, etc. This restaurant seems like it could be a place popular with such people.
And again, right now that patch of land is fenced off (or was last time I was there) and can't be used by kids for frisbee or whatever. (also it's perhaps not the best piece of land for frisbee and sunbathing due to its location on the edge of the plaza and right next to the road.) Plus there are lots of other places for kids, like Soldiers' and Sailors', CMU's lawn, Flagstaff, etc. I think this restaurant could be a plus. Also it would be pretty nice if they had outdoor seating.
You can't just say "go develop the rest of the city" if it's not ripe for development and if such a plan wouldn't be successful.
