We used a real estate agent to rent out our former residence, and we used her in part because she does a lot of executive relocations (we ended up renting to an executive who was relocating, in fact). If you would like her contact information just PM me and I will pass it along.

Shiloh St. and Virginia Ave have a grocery store, drug store, banks, gas station, etc. Not upscale, but enough to tide a resident over.

Mt. Washington is probably your best bet for such stipulations. I should note that Pittsburgh does not have an amazingly vibrant downtown like Philly does. The action is actually in the surrounding neighborhoods.

What about Washington's Landing? It is a different view than on Mt. Washington, but an interesting view. Plus, there is a great running/walking trail around the island. I would imagine a lot of professionals live there.

Just watch out for Mark Madden.

The only downside to that place is traffic, one way in, one out.

And can you believe it's not in a flood zone?

There are apartments along the river of the North Shore. Not sure if there are lofts in that area though.

I meant it doesn't have a vibrant business district. Coming from Philly, I'm sure he is accustom to having an abundance of amenities nearby within walking distance.

Thanks for all of the great advice and ideas. Actually, I am looking forward to being in a smaller and quieter city than Philadelphia. I've been to Pittsburgh many many times over the years and have always been impressed with its beauty and, its culture and it's amply cordial residents. I'm looking forward to living there!

I'm guessing you might find some units in the Cork Factory (Strip District) or Heinz Lofts (across the river from that) that would have views of the city skyline. More likely the former than the latter, and the Strip District is in fact a vibrant business district for grocery and related shopping. I think the vacancy at the Cork Factory is pretty low; not sure what kind of turnover.

Those places are loft units. More traditional apartments are in places like Encore on 7th (this was a newly built apartment tower a few years back) or the ones on the North Shore. Some of these units would have views toward the city buildings. Encore would be a very close up view, basically among the other city towers. But there is space there with lower buildings such that if you were high enough up you get a nice view of being in the city without there being a building smack dab up against your window. :-)

I think most of what's on Grandview these days are owned condo units, but you may sometimes see these put up for rent. I think the Mountvue at 5 Grandview is still a rental building, but I dunno if it's good.

Washington Plaza, by the arena, is another apartment rental building where some units would have good views. Have read mixed things about this place recently I think.

Lots of other nice places to live without city view. :-)

Someone at the 1000 Grandview condo is renting this place all furnished for who knows how much. This is the building that goes down over the side of the hill, near the restaurant area. http://1000grandview.com/
