Hi guys, I'm a 24 year old single male looking to move to pittsburgh very soon. I am looking for a decent apt with a young scene close to downtown. I have heard to look in Oakland and Mount Washington. Are there any other neighborhoods I should look at or streets to avoid in the mentioned neighborhoods? I would also like to avoid high crime areas, so if anyone knows neighborhoods to avoid too, that would be great. Thanks!

Take a look at South Side, Lawrenceville, and Bloomfield. South Oakland is full of annoying and loud undergrads who trash their places. Mt. Washington doesn't have much of a scene. It has a few restaurants, some nice homes on the ledge, and lookouts of the city and that's about it.

I agree. Parts of North Oakland are pretty nice, but much of Oakland is student ghetto land. Mt. Washington is not a place that I would suggest a single 24 year old male looking for nightlife to live. There's not much going on up there. I'd look at Bloomfield, Southside, Friendship, or Lawrenceville. Shadyside is nice too but generally more expensive.

Squirrel hill is a good place to look too in addition to those mentioned above. Shadyside is the nicest city neighborhood imo but has the most yuppy vibe and is the most expensive too.

People also like the strip district. Each area has its own feel to it depends on what you are looking for and how much you've got to spend.

Some idea of your budget would be helpful. But given your stated desires and ignoring possible budgetary issues, I'd look at the South Side and Shadyside. I'd also consider living in Downtown itself: it doesn't have a huge nightlife of its own (although there are a few cool restaurants and bars), but it is very easy to get from there to any of the nearby neighborhoods with more nightlife.

Mt. Washington is a great neighborhood, but it's quiet. I think you would like the South Side, Lawrenceville, Bloomfield, Friendship, Strip District, Downtown, or maybe even the War Streets on the North Side. These all have a young/ trendy vibe as well as lots of historic character and easy access to hot spots in the city. I would recommend Oakland or Shadyside if you want to be surrounded by students all the time. Otherwise, skip it. But you should absolutely drive around, explore, and find an area that appeals to you before deciding.

As far as neighborhoods to avoid, I would try not to rent in the Hill District, Homewood/ Larimer/ Lincoln-Lemington, or certain parts of Wilkinsburg.

Lawrenceville, Bloomfield or The South Side..but the South Side is full of RATS, so if you don't mind living amongst those, then go right on ahead.
