I don't know specifically about biotech, but healthcare is probably our #1 industry in Pittsburgh. We have the oldest population of any country outside of South Florida and a tremendous amount of hospitals. The University of Pittsburgh is well regarded as one of the best (and most heavily funded) research hospitals in the nation...they've all but taken over the neighborhood of Oakland here in the city (some would say that hospital system runs this city- for better or worse). I'm not sure that a strong healthcare industry = a strong biotech industry. The Bayer corporation (yes, the aspirin) has its corporate headquarters and research park in Pittsburgh. I think Novartis also has a facility here as well.
As far as high-tech jobs...we've actually been referred to as the "Silicon Valley of the East". Yahoo was started here (and has since moved). Carnegie Mellon University has arguably the US's most renowned software-engineering and robotics programs. They just finished building a large robotics development lab in Lawrenceville (a city neighborhood). There are many small and mid-size tech firms downtown.
I know all that was pretty vague, but that's all I know!

O
