Only cities that beat the Burgh are the usuals - NYC, LA, SF, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia...
Minneapolis, and Seattle are the only 2 that are comparable to the Burgh that beat Pittsburgh...
Kinda shocked that Porland ME ranked as high as it did...Porland OR would seem to make more logical sense to me...but well...Another good showing for the burgh...wonder if we could squeeze into the top 10 once the economy recovers...

Portland, ME is a great little city. good to see it get some love over the much hyped OR. they have a neat ferry system that takes you to carless islands. a tunerville trolley around the old port, some nice parks, agreat dining, beer, etc. an underrated city. in that respect, it shares a lot with Pitt.

It is really amazing how much the bar and restaurant scene has improved here since I first arrived in 1993.
Anyway, here is a summary of the methodology:

Given that total volume of establishments was a factor, and that Pittsburgh is the #22 metro by size, I'd say anything at around 22 means we did as expected, substantially higher than that above expectations, and substantially lower than that below expectations.
So are overall ranking was above expectations, which is good. The same goes for the rankings in food and drink and low-impact sports.
Our gambling ranking was below expectations, but I don't necessarily see that as a problem. Just having the expected rankings in shopping and popular entertainment seems appropriate to me and likely hard to change.
One area where I am a bit surprised is culture--I would have thought we would do better, but then again maybe not if you are just counting establishments--we have some very big cultural establishments. But maybe diversifying a bit from the biggest players would be a worthwhile goal.
Finally, I also see high-impact sports as an area of potential improvement, if we can make better use of the rivers and such for recreation.

Yeah, but hipsters suck and they don't entertain me. I am more of a little house on the praire re-run type of guy followed by a night of bingo. Thats why Pittsburgh is my style.

I couldn't agree more. Hipsters make me sick. I remember seeing these clowns in NYC act like it was an adventure to go from their apt on the Upper West Side to Brooklyn. I would hate for Pittsburgh to ever get like that. I would rather the city burn to the ground than to be taken over by hipsters, hippies, and yuppies.

There is something majorly screwy in a system that ranks Boston #1 and NY #2 in high-impact sports such as skiing (pictured), Chicago #8, Denver #20, Colorado Springs #69 and Provo #98. I don't think so! Even Boston isn't *that* close to major ski areas, and they're not powder skiing like you have in the west. NY is how far from a major ski area? Chicago is at least 500 miles from one, while Denver, COS and Provo have them in their backyards, e.g. an hour's or so drive. I don't think so! That's why I never take these rankings seriously.

Well maybe it's because skiing is only one small part of the larger category of high impact sports...

The interactive describes the category in question as "skiing facilities, fitness centers, and recreational sports centers." Skiing facilities maybe not so much, but you can't swing a dead cat in New York without hitting a fitness or sports center of some sort.
