Default Education a hindrance to getting hired?

Hi All,

I've lurked a while. I'm looking to move back to PGH. I grew up there. I miss home, and the values of the people. Maybe I was wrong to think that with education, I'd have someone knocking on my door to interview me. NOT.

Ok, so now what? Remove the degree? Look at an admin job or something, just to get home and get started? ugh.

Education isn't a hindrance, I don't think. But we have a higher-than-average percentage of people with a college education here. Which may mean that a degree isn't as much of an advantage. More like it's just expected. So pretending it doesn't exist is probably a bad idea.

Good luck finding something soon.

What's your degree? What is your experience?

If you do that, I highly recommend that you don't add it to your resume if you want to ever be viewed as something other than an admin by prospective employers.

Hi, Thanks...

BA communication and MA curriculum development /distance learning.

I'm in balt/dc now. We have a high % of degreed folks here too. I get calls steady enough to keep a roof and bread (freelance.) PGH wants "younger " ppl to come /stay home, but they aren't hiring.

HA

Well the Baltimore/DC area is obviously bigger, so you'll find more job openings there. That doesn't mean your degree is hurting you when it comes to jobs in Pittsburgh. Just keep trying, I'm sure you'll find something eventually.

Can't your telecommute with that type of career?

I know many people who live in Pittsburgh, but work for companies all over the country.

They work from their homes, and visit the corporate offices a few times per year.

I'm just wondering because 'distance learing' is all about telecommuting in a sense.
