Moving to Pittsburgh
I got a job at the University of Pittsburgh and am looking to relocate. I have never lived in Pittsburgh and am unfamiliar with the area. I will be working at the university of pittsburgh - oakland campus. How far would a commute would Bethel Park be? What are other areas to live in that would be a short commute.

Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, Highland Park, and Friendship are all great city neighborhoods on the East End. They are all very safe, along the bus lines, and about a 10-minute bike ride.

My partner just got a job at Pitt as well, and we moved to Bethel Park near the South Hills Village mall. His commute will be pretty easy on public transportation: 30-45 minutes on the light rail (the "T") to downtown, and then another 20 mins on the bus from downtown to Oakland.
We chose Bethel Park because it was near some great shopping, a great dog park at South Park, was a newer apartment, and was close to the T line.
Other closer in areas may be a shorter commute, but we couldn't be happier. We also looked at Highland Park, Squirrel Hill, Shadyside, and some closer in suburbs like Dormont and Green Tree.

Is there any particular reason Bethel Park is your only choice?

Hey there,
I just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in April and have lived near Pittsburgh my whole life. Congrats on getting a job at Pitt! You can definitely try the surrounding areas, like Shadyside and Squirrel Hill - they are nice neighborhoods for young adults to live in. South Side is awesome, but a bit expensive. I am moving to Shadyside in August and found a really good deal on an apartment. I don't want to push my product, but I just started a web site called LandOrSlum.com where you can check out an entire database of landlords to rent from in Pittsburgh and across the nation. Once you move into your new apartment, you can also rate your landlords.
The site is Landorslum.com: The landlord rating website. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette featured the site in a cover story yesterday.
Here's the link to the story: Web site lets students tell all about their landlords.
I hope this info helps you and good luck!

In my opinion, an hour-long commute every day (each way) is way too long. Even 30-45 minutes each way is too much of your life to spend in traffic. There are beautiful neighborhoods within the city, only 10 minutes from downtown. You'll have more of your life to enjoy, resources won't be wasted, and I would bet that you'll be in a much better mood by the time you get home.

How old are you, do you have a family, how much do you want (or can you afford) to spend, and do you want to live in a more city like atmosphere or more suburban? Do you have parking at Pitt (many of the jobs don't, most of the ones that do are expensive... my parking spot in Oakland was like $130 a month lease) or do you need to take the bus?
There are many nice places to live in Pittsburgh for all budgets and lifestyles but its hard to give a one size fits all sort of recommendation.

Might as well tell the poster to drive if it's going to take her that long by the bus and T, plus working for Pitt should give free or cheap parking in Oakland hopefully. Bethel Park is a nice place to live and go for it!

No free parking for Pitt employees, unless you're the chancellor or one of the higher ranking employees.
