I am going to be a grad student at CMU in the fall and I am looking for a place to live. I know it is a little further away from the school, but I fell in love with an apartment I saw listed in the Monroeville area. However, I am not sure how safe the area is and I am asking because the price seems a little too good for the quality of place that is being offered. Also, how convenient is that area of the city as far as amenities offered and ease of getting around on public transit? Thanks!

What part of Monroeville? Certain areas have seen a decline over the years.

Monroeville is safe. The apartment might seem cheap if you are moving from a high cost of living area.

There's lots of shopping and restaurants in the area. Monroeville is suburbia malls and strip malls.

You will need a car if you live in Monroeville for your shopping and socializing in the area. Public transportation is only available for commuting into the city.

Even the areas that have declined are still safe though.

Monroeville's pretty far out for a regular commute to CMU. You'll probably be spending at least an hour on the bus, and if your hours on campus are irregular, that might be an issue.

Monroeville for the most part is safe, but it's been going through a transitional phase, in other words, the area is becoming more diverse, but it is still a solid middle class community. The business corridor on the other hand has basically stagnanted, which may be due to the overbuilding of shopping centers on the 22 corridor. I'm not sure about the buses, however, but there's the East Busway which can take you into town quicker than the normally congested Parkway East.

There is the 67A for commuting to CMU but that is a long ride...I would take the 67A to the busway in Wilkinsburg and transfer to the EBO for a much faster commute....

I would however also look for something alot closer in the city....You should check out SQ Hill...

Doesn't the EBO go to the other end of Oakland? I know it goes to Robinson St., but I'm not sure where that is. I was told that's near Magee Hopspital.

I would agree with the others - most grad students work irregular hours, and commuting back and forth to Monroeville would get really old quickly. As much as you might love the apartment, I would strongly suggest looking for something closer to CMU.
