You're right. My apologies - that comment of mine was out of line.

I think I made my point, if you'll look at the post prior to this one. Just as all suburbs are not as sterile as some are, and all suburbanites are not as frightened and apprehensive as others, all urban neighborhoods do not have maurading gangs roaming the streets with smash and grab a nightly occurance.
I merely played off an urban stereotype (crime! urban gangs! break-ins!) and applied it to the suburban stereotype (suburban gangs! isolation! crime!)
I grew up in the suburbs (which has its share of crime - witness the car-jacking in Ross Twp. the other day in broad daylight, the attempted rape at Ross Park Mall yesterday, and that's just this week), so I know that you can't hide anywhere these days. I find the variety of everything available in the city more to my liking, and I spend $40 a month on gas.

Not every one is cut out for the urban culture. Frankly, after living out here in my urban culture with all it's "diversity" -- the kid next door taking up the trumpet, and they make him play it OUTSIDE because he's so good ; a walkable area that you can't walk in for the druggies and street people; copper choppers overhead almost daily -- and nightly; smash and grabs everywhere that don't get reported because why bother AND they don't clean up the glass -- sometimes down the whole street; cars with boom boom rap music playing so loudly that it sets of the car alarms as it goes down the street: the gang wars our street got caught up in with two suicides and one cop shoot out leading to a fatality last year -- I could go and on about all gloriousness of living in an urban culture...
Bless me, I'll take the suburbs any day! Because if that crap is what you call "soul" then I'll be an atheist.

You're doing the same thing that I just apologized for... making gross, incorrect generalizations (though I'll admit my suburban post paled in comparison to your comical and outrageous descriptions of the city. That was great... I hope it was intended to be as funny and ironic as it turned out.
Anyway... sorry again about the insensitive post. Hopefully I'll survive the smash 'n grabs, druggies, pimps, broken glass, copper choppers, and gang wars on my bike home so that I can post something tomorrow.

Actually -- I wasn't being ironic -- I live it. I live in Oakland, CA... in the flats. When we bought here 20 years ago we just knew the place had to get better... and it did... and went down again and it's on it's way back again... but low wages and bad educations mean your home grown population is in a hole they are finding very hard to climb out of... and most don't.
In fact right now one of the reasons our neighborhood is getting hit is that the police are cracking down on the really bad neighborhoods... so crime is branching out.
Are all urban neighborhoods that way? No -- in fact -- some are worse. But most are better.

I think some generalizing is going on in both directions here. Not all suburbs are full of McMansions, and not all city neighborhoods are dangerous.

For the record, the area where the OP is talking about is surrounded full circle by the ghetto. I know the area very well and I myself wouldn't desire to live there. What is wrong with you people? This is a young white girl from Erie, I don't think any of you would recommend your daughter to live in such an area.

Thanks for providing a reality check, Pimps. Not many people here are familiar enough with the area to tell her if it's safe or not. We seem to have the same problem when someone inquires about Observatory Hill. We just don't know if it's safe or not.

Observatory Hill is very SAFE!!!
Just a note...Observatory Hill is actually one of the safest city neighborhoods. The area is really on the upswing. Houses are being renovated back to their original grand structures, the people there are wonderful, and Riverview Park is beautiful. I work in the area and I am also renovating a house there that we will be moving to. I will be around on this site from now on to tell people that it is safe because now I realize what a misconception the area has from reading the posts here.
OBSERVATORY HILL IS SAFE AND A BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO LIVE AND WORK!!!!
Spread the word.
Thanks

Go team Go!! Anyone care to drive up Perrysville ave. and substanciate these claims. Of course as with any area there are good streets, but this sounds like more CD propoganda.
Mark my words, one of these days someone is going to come on here and say that Larimer is safe and on the upswing.
BTW, what happen to the guy from florida who bought a house on the northside and claimed that the E. Ohio st. area is great? I figured he would have more input after moving in.
My point is that many people change their tune after moving to the northside. It is not for everyone.
My point is that most people think with their hearts when they should be using their melon.

North Side is Fantastic
My wife and family live in in a neighborhood off of Perrysville Avenue and I can assure you that this is not a bad area. we have lived here for seven years and it is a wonderful neighborhood. Perrysville itself has terrific homes and runs through many communities. The North Side is a gem to the city - most amenties of any city location, close to everything, terrific cultural spots. a great place to be.
