Maps are not too helpful here....remember that anyone who has a zip code that starts 152... also has a "Pittsburgh" address, even if they live in Bellevue or Penn Hills or 10 miles outside of the city on McKnight Road.

...and the people in Mt. Lebo and USC hate that.

Ms. Montanez did what I feel is a great job of defining a Pittsburgher in the abstract today in her Pittsburgh Magazine blog post about Sally Wiggin, "...unaffected, genuinely kind, humble, and living her life with a proper perspective of the grand scheme of things." These are the good qualities that I've found to be common to people with a Pittsburgh attitude, regardless of what map point they currently or formerly exist on.

true - i'm originally from connecticut, which has no major league teams left, and really only had an nhl hockey team briefly; people root for boston or ny teams there mostly. and those places *are* very close and are much more major cities than any ct city. but no one from any part of ct would say they were from boston or new york! well unless maybe they were in a band and played one city or another a lot.

She's describing one person. I grew up there, and I knew many people who did not fit that description.

Well said and well put! I don't live in Pittsburgh, but have traveled a bit, and everyone I've met from the Pitt metro area have been as Ms. Montanez describes. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but I can't unequivocally say that about people I've known from New York, or California, or the South (where I grew up).

In contrast to the OP regarding Ms. Montanez, I find her to be a genuinely talented writer with a wonderful gift for words and caricature. Even when she's a bit wacky, she's still lovable (kind of like Roseann Rosannadanna), and I believe that "Pittsburghers" (regardless of definition) are extremely fortunate to have her around.

I like her blog, too. I think Scott's just bitter because he was banned from commenting there.

And I never said there were people here who didn't fit that description (or that there weren't people elsewhere who did).

The full quote is:
"Since revealing my identity last August, I've had the opportunity to meet Sally on several occasions and can verify that she is a true Pittsburgher—unaffected, genuinely kind, humble, and living her life with a proper perspective of the grand scheme of things."

So she was describing one person, but the description implies many others from the area have common qualities.

Some people are obviously easily entertained.
