So, I'm gonna be visiting the 'Burgh for the first time in YEARS this Memorial Day weekend. Hooray!!!

I will need a car while I'm there:

The question is do I just use a traditional rental car from the airport since I'm flying in or do I get creative and try to figure out how to use the airport express bus/etc to get to a Zipcar "dahntahn" b/c I'm a happy Zipcar member and would rather pay them and they'd be like $20 or $30 cheaper for me. Looked at the Pgh transit website and it was very confusing perhaps b/c I'm used to larger cities transit systems.

I was leaning towards the Zipcar option but people in my family are now saying just keep it simple and grab a rental car from the airport so now I'm slightly leaning that way.

I currently live in Chicago and thus don't own a car and therefore would have to buy full insurance coverage from the rental car agency which is really challenging to figure out their rates online--I can ballpark it but that's about it. Thanks in advance :-)

Well, the 28X bus takes you from the airport to downtown or on to Oakland, and there are Zipcars that live in those areas. The 28X always used to stop opposite the Hilton, and there's a Zipcar right around the corner from it, just for one example. (It's a Mazda 3. I see it every day. On Friday I noticed a newer Mazda 3 sitting there, not sure if that was just a coincidence or they replaced it with a new one.)

The bus trip is just a few bucks. If that's worth it for you, then go for it. Usually weekend rates at the airport are not too bad, but holiday weekend, not sure. Now, if you're not specifically headed to downtown or Oakland or similar, then this might be kind of a silly detour. The bus will take about half an hour to downtown and another 10 minutes probably to Oakland, plus you have to check the schedule, so make sure to build in enough time when you're headed back to the airport.

Some credit card companies offer free rental car insurance coverage if you use their card to book the car, so I'd check into that - it might make the price differential less significant.

The 28X to Downtown is very easy and convenient. Here is the handflyer with a map and schedule:
