A house for 11,900....whats wrong with it?
Ok, so I am still doing my online research regarding Pittsburgh and found a listing for a four bedroom two bath home for 11,900. Coming from Southern CA I am blown away to see a home going for sooooo little. It is listed as being on Spring Garden in the Shaler Township area... is this just a horrible neighborhood, is that why it is so inexpensive? Any insight that can be given to be regarding this low price would be appreciated. Thanks...

Can't be good for that price -you should know you get what you pay for. That's a no brainer

There are some areas in PA where the RE prices are very depressed. The houses are often old and run down. In fact, the whole areas are often old and run down. If you are a handyman, sometimes you can re-do them, but it is hard to find contractors. The people generally equate new houses with value, and don't like the old houses. (old can mean 1880-1940) Often they are really let-go, needing major renovations.
If you renovate one of these houses, you might wind up with a really cool old house, BUT the people around your area might be the types you would find on the Jerry Springer show...

Most Likely Not a Typo
But Spring Garden in not a very good section of town. It is an old section of Pittsburgh near the Heinz plant & the Allegheny River.
Your post said it was in Shaler Township. Most of Spring Garden is in the city of Pittsburgh, specifically the Northside. If it is in Shaler Township, that is a plus (public schools & other public services will probably be better).
I can't speak for the neighborhood the house is in, but the Northside area, in general, has a bad reputation for crime.

No Free Lunch...
I think it's fair to say that almost anyone who sells something offers it at a price they believe to be appropriate for the value of the property. If they thought if was worth more, they'd more than likely be asking more. Think about what a house for less than $12,000 might entail...

I responded to this yesterday, but my post isn't here. Go to
www.county.allegheny.pa.us and search the real estate. You will see pictures and tax information on all property's in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area. If you have the address of the house you can look to ee the general condition of the property

To WVBound1
I noticed that your post had been removed, so I wrote a note to the folks who maintain this site asking, "Why?" The website you posted was a government one, not commercial. I thought it was a valuable tool for anyone looking at housing in the Pittsburgh area. I'll be interested to see if they explain why they removed it (assuming they did).
I have not yet received an answer...

First of all read the rules - if you want an answer then ask right people. Secondly, it was a link to realtor/mls so it was deleted.

Sorry...
...that I didn't know where to go to ask the right people. I still don't see any info on your site that says whom to ask about such issues. If people need to spend a lot of time searching for such info, maybe it should be relocated to a more obvious location.
...that when I went to the specified website, it took me directly to the Allegheny County Assessor's website, not to any MLS site.
...that I took the trouble to send my message privately to those who run this website, rather than posting it for everyone to see. I thought avoiding controversy might be the polite thing to do.
...that you obviously don't feel the same.
