Well, we've often heard the Left make excuses for the losses of VA, NJ and MA as being due to local politics, but we knew then that wasn't true, especially when the winning candidates were running specifically against obama's policies.
PRINCETON, NJ -- By 55% to 39%, more registered voters say a candidate's stand on national issues -- rather than his or her ability to help people at the district level -- is what matters more to them in voting for Congress. The percentage naming issues as the more important factor is the highest recorded on this measure in the nearly two-decade-long Gallup trend, although similar to that seen at points in the last two midterm election years.
Let's look at New York State. I'd say it's no more or less Democratic than Massachusetts or California. Yet Scott Brown took Kennedy's senate seat in Massachusetts, and now Carly Fiorina is a serious threat to Barbara Boxer in California.
But in New York, the *state* GOP has been so thoroughly discredited that even in a bad year for Democrats, the governorship is almost certainly going to Democrat Andrew Cuomo, and Kirsten Gillibrand is almost certain to retain her Senate seat despite lack of popularity.
Even in a wave of Republican pick-ups, local politics in New York are setting the state against the trend of the rest of the nation despite not differing much culturally from California or Massachusetts.
What this tells me is that apathetics have re-opened their eyes. Some of them bought the liberal hype that "conservatism is dead" and they went back into hibernation, apparently convinced that there was no hope for fiscal or social responsibility on the horizon. The Tea Party, if nothing else, has been successful at unveiling the facade of "hope" and "change." Those folks should be commended for forcing the issues onto the front page. It's working.
