No...the earth IS a closed system. Meteors also come in from time to time, as well as us sending up junk into space through rocket science. However, 99.999 percent of the matter on earth stays on earth and 99.9999999999999999999999999999999999999.... percent of the matter outside of earth stays outside of earth. I really don't like to have a debate when people use rare exceptions to the rule to attempt to discredit the rule. That is being intellectually disengenuous.
If economics is dependent upon matter and energy, on earth, then it is indeed a closed system. Its a zero sum game. What distorts peoples understanding is that all reactions are not real-time. They are often conserved into the future and released into the future. Hence, the gap between receiving the benefit and paying the offsetting cost......may be generations....which creates the impression of progess and gain. What has really happened is that the present has be added to at the expense of subtraction from the future. Its like with the debt levels of the US economy. We create debt to make life better for us today....at the expense of making life worse for us tomorrow, as debt is simply a claim on future earnings.
Obama creates debt to put Americans into slavery to the rest of the world (esp. China). Is this your idea of reparations and fairness? Slavery comes in all forms. A man is either free or he isn't. Whether his master is another man or the government makes it no less slavery.

If you took the time to read the article you would know that the pictures on the NPR site are of slave children in the US with their actual slave paperwork. The children in the pictures above are on a slave ship and according to the blog these pictures are also a rare find. The slave ship pictures could have been taken while the ship was on route to the states so it would be a different sort of slave pic then the one on the NPR site.
Once again take the time to read the NPR article to actually know what you are talking about and try reading a history book. I have also learned plenty about the holocaust and the potato famine and I learned very little about my own history in the good old U.S public school system. If I have to learn about other cultures to become a well-rounded citizen you can take the time to learn about other cultures as well.
