It's a simple concept: Control the news media and you control the flow of information, i.e., only what you want disclosed and propagandized is put out to the masses.

The current administration already strongly controls what's delivered as "news" by, NBC, MSNBC, as both are owned by GE, who will profit greatly in the billions of dollars range, once the heathcare reform takes full effect.

CBS, ABC, CNN, NYT, WP, AP, are all owned and operated by owners with stanch ties to the Democrat party, and liberalism, socialist ideology. They usually put out their "news" as fact and truth, straight from the White House press room, without any actual evaluation of the content.

This administration has done little to hide the fact they desire to control the media and the Internet blogs, and fight tooth and nail against the actual truth being reported. They paint any news organization or blogger who opposes their views as "crazies" or right wingers, or racists, attempting to discourage the public from listening to the opposition.

Obama's commencement speech last month at Hampton University speaks volumes in regard to his opinion on free speech, and his fear it will side track his true agenda.

Quote:
"You're coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don't always rank all that high on the truth meter," Obama said at Hampton University, Virginia.

"With iPods and iPads and Xboxes and PlayStations, -- none of which I know how to work -- information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation," Obama said.

He bemoaned the fact that "some of the craziest claims can quickly claim traction," in the clamor of certain blogs and talk radio outlets.
"All of this is not only putting new pressures on you, it is putting new pressures on our country and on our democracy."
AFP: Obama bemoans 'diversions' of IPod, Xbox era

I've always been a strong supporter of free speech. Let the public hear both opposing sides of an issue, and let them decide for themselves which view they choose to believe. If this plan stands, it will only further erode free speech as we now know it.

This plan would give taxpayer dollars to left-leaning media.

Also the National Hispanic Media Coalition complained to the FCC about..
"Hate Speech"aka people supporting enforcement on Illegal Immigration.
The Coalition includes groups like La Raza wants the FCC to shut down..
Speech it doesnt like on Tv and Radio.

They want to use our tax money to bail out failing leftist media..
At the same time working on things like the fairness doctrine.
The title alone has no business coming out of the federal government:

POTENTIAL POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS TO SUPPORT
THE REINVENTION OF JOURNALISM

This is disturbing on SO many different levels. Why is the government stepping in to bail out yet another industry? Why not every other failing industry? Oh right, because it will benefit by having control over information dissemination. So let's prop up another industry that has become outdated and is becoming less and less useful. There are plenty of other news outlets i.e., internet news sites, cable news, radio... we don't need to prop up a failing and outdated print media that has outlived it's usefulness in today's society.

Then we get to government funding of the press.

"Many people, including journalists, recoil at the thought of government assistance to sustain journalism. This is understandable, given the vital importance of avoiding government interference with truthful news reporting. Nonetheless...." and they go on to list the incrementation of government funding and subsidizing the press and news, until they make the case that since they have gone this far what's wrong with phhhht... just going the extra mile and have thousands of journalists employed directly by the government.

"Increase Government Funding

Establish a “journalism” division of AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps is the federal program that places young people with nonprofits to get training and do public service work.87 According to proponents, this proposal would help to ensure that young people who love journalism will stay in the field. “It strikes us as a win-win; we get more journalists covering our communities, and young journalists have a chance to gain valuable experience – even at a time when the small dailies where they might have started are laying reporters off.”

I find that funny too. Hard to figure out. Bail out the car makers, get car maker votes. Bail out newpapers, get lots of even more biased-towards-you coverage. Remember, they also want to bail out UNION pension funds, the unions who are spending millions of dollars in pro-democrat funding and ads.

Its not just looking for legitimate ways to keep the industry alive, they want to create an army of federally employed journalists.

..and they want to amend the IRS codes so that news organizations are beholden to government for taxpayer subsides, which just gives them a foot in the door. This will give the federal government leverage over news agencies, just like they do with states, when the feds threaten to withhold highway funds or public education monies if a state does not comply with some unfunded mandate or change to state law or regulations, the the federal government requests of them.

Provide a tax credit to news organizations for every journalist they employ. This could help pay the salary of every journalist. Although the proponent of this idea died before it had been fully developed, one speaker noted it is one way to subsidize journalists without the government picking one paper over another.96

Establish Citizenship News Vouchers. Citizenship news vouchers would allow every American tax payer to allocate some amount of government funds to the non-profit media organization of their choice. People could indicate on their tax return whether and to which nonprofit organization they want a specific amount (perhaps up to $200) to be donated, but they would not be required to designate a donation.

They could split their “federal funds” donation among several different qualifying nonprofit media. Proponents of this approach suggest it would create a funding mechanism to encourage viable independent Internet journalism while avoiding government control or the creation of a bureaucracy that could influence the recipients of the money based on politics.

And I'm not even a third of the way thru this monstrosity.

Its hard to even get past the title without bursting into laughter.

It will never occur to one single pinhead that the reason journalism is dead is because it became a for profit instead of for the sake of truth.

The press and contemporary news media has only a marginally better polling rate than Congress which is actually lower than Lyme disease, Gonorrhea, and root canals.

"In the First Amendment, the Founding Fathers gave the free press the protection it must have to fulfill its essential role in our democracy. The press was to serve the governed, not the governors. The Government's power to censor the press was abolished so that the press would remain forever free to censure the Government. The press was protected so that it could bare the secrets of government and inform the people. Only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. And paramount among the responsibilities of a free press is the duty to prevent any part of the government from deceiving the people and sending them off to distant lands to die of foreign fevers and foreign shot and shell."

Sorry but I don;t think the current state of journalism is ideal, it never was because the distribution of it was held and controlled by a few a people.

These companies are failing because they have lost control of the distribution of content. What I mean by that is they can no longer leverage their ability to control the medium. 30 years ago if you wanted to deliver news to someone via a newspaper, video or audio you needed a tremendous amount of resources. The Internet has changed that, for a few bucks anyone can be a news reporter.

These companies need to fail, decentralization of who controls the news can only lead to very good things down the road.
