A prominent Bush administration official – Colonel Lawrence B. Wilkerson, former Chief of Staff to Secretary of State Colin Powell – stated under oath recently that the administration knew, as early as 2002, that many Guantánamo Bay detainees were innocent of any action against the U.S., that these men were tortured while held at Gitmo, and that several officials, including President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, directly knew about their innocence but lied about it, choosing to leave the prisoners at the site to cover up the administration’s mistakes.

Then why hasnt Obama "freed the innocent, and closed Guantanamo"?

bounty hunters were promised more than five times the per capita annual income in Afghanistan to hand over al-Qaeda suspects to the United States – which likely meant many detainees were handed over for the wrong reasons

So if someone elver claims the bounty on Osama Bin Ladin, they will be doing it for the wrong reason?

none of the major US mainstream media outlets have picked up on his allegations

So not even the liberal media is taking the man seriously..

Looks like liberals got their new individual to "hero worship"

On the one hand you are claiming that it was apparent that there were innocent men detained and on the other had you reject the idea that it happened.

President Obama should press on with Guantánamo closure and repatriate innocent men cleared for release

Truly the biggest news event of 2010. pghquest's assertion above that even the liberal media isn't covering it ignores the fact that ALL American mainstream media is ignoring this story. Just like they all ignored the rape charge brought against Bush by a woman in Texas, a woman who later died of from "suicide" less than a year later. The media is only biased against the truth. Whatever ideology appears to be promoted is just window dressing of the divide-and-conquer variety.

All those lives destroyed, all those people tortured, all of it to justify war, the ultimate crime against humanity. And how unfortunate that the violent rage I feel, that I can hardly contain, almost certainly lowers me to their level. I know two wrongs don't make a right, but right now, another wrong [insert vivid imagination here] feels just about right...

I just got done reading the book Enemy Combatant I recommend it to EVERYONE! Great book about a guy that was held captive by the U.S for 3 years! He wasn't a terrorist but they didn't care.

Consider the source--that being the State Department under Colin Powell. That agency was at odds with the White House from the get-go and actively worked to undermine the president's policies. It was Richard Armitage, Deputy Undersecretary of State, that actually exposed Valerie Plame as a CIA employee to Robert Novak and didn't have the decency to take the blame for it, rather letting Scooter Libby take the fall all because Libby worked for Cheney.

I get a kick out of bootlickers like Wilkerson who have a sudden attack of conscience after they've milked all they can from the system they now attack. As far as the detainees at Guantanamo being "innocent" how would he know that? A system was set up to evaluate each detainee to determine whether they should be held or released. Given the number of released detainees who returned to the fight I'd say we erred on the side of caution to the detriment of our troops who have had to deal with these terrorists all over again. As far as torture, 3 detainees were waterboarded. If you consider that torture so be it. The rest were interrogated but not tortured. Cry me a river.
