Maybe if the government did it's job with regulation and inspections then we might not have this hole.
Rubber stamping, exemptions, waivers, non-inspections and then deflection away from the government once TSHTF.
Maybe, just maybe, inspections would have uncovered problems and had the rig shut down til fixed.
The government agencies responsible for overseeing, regulating and inspecting these rigs did not do their job and they seem to be getting a free pass ? Yeah the agency got restructured but all those folks just got shuffled around..they didn't get fired. Only 1 person got thrown under the bus for this and it wasn't Salazar, the one who promised to clean it up.
You are exactly correct on this. It started with President Bush allowing corporations to police themselves. President Obama promised in his campaign to fix things. He has completely and totally failed to do so. This does not alter the hypocrisy of the drill drill drill folks who want no government intervention and then cry for bailouts when they screw up.
I just spent a week on the Miss gulf coast. I was working at helping restore the suffering economic impact of this disaster. I, pretty much singlehandedly, restored a couple of Casinos to profitability. You all need to do your part.
Florida Bob, you are a true blue American. Let me assure you that I have done the same on numerous occasions. Return to work, save money so you can go again. I understand the Casinos are giving money away.

They always do, at least that's what they tell you.
So if we open ANWR and say Exxon got the lease then you believe that BP would not be drilling in deep water?
Do you believe in states rights? Do you believe that if states do not want drilling off there coasts that their want should be honored?
Why would they go through the expence of drilling deep if they were able to avoid it?
Did I say anything about ignoring state rights? I didn't think so.
Do you know why the drilling is in deep water, instead of closer to shore where it would be safer, and cleanup -- should it be needed -- far easier?
Yes, because the Democrats have blocked further drilling in shallow water or on land.
