The oil is now landing on the beaches of Pensacola Florida. If anything shows us WHY we need a STRONG Federal and much weaker state governments, this oil mess does.
Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi are the 3 biggest states that enjoy the fruits of the off shore oil business. Alabama got a small amount and Florida gets no revenue or employment from the off shore oil business. But as we see, when things go really BAD, it is not just the "oil states" that pay a heavy price for it. There is no way to channel this oil so that it just effects the 3 oil states. If there was, the conservatives might have some argument for state and local control. We could simply leave the mess to Mississippi and Louisiana to clean up and the rest of the country could go on about its business.
This is a great example of how actions in ONE state effect OTHER states. The same things could be said about many things from education to drivers licenses. This is why we have, and need, a very strong central government.

Yes, strong federal response to disasters such as this, NOT to running healthcare, taking over private corporations, etc, etc.

This is the ONE area where the federal government should be on the ball, but as you can see by obama's response to the spill, to the 2 month long journey of oil headed towards shore, they can't even get this right.

Health care is a necessity and the government should run it or at least have a big role in how it runs. As for GM, AIG, the giant monster mega banks, housing and other things, they should be left to private businesses. None of them are necessities and the government should only regulate them to insure robust competition and fair play. The market will do the rest.

The Federal government does a good job most of the time. Social Security for example has a SMALLER overhead as a percentage than private pension accounts have and they are pretty efficient. The trick is to remove the command and control structure of the agencies as far from the politics as you can.

The federal government has stifled the states from doing anything. Did you miss the fact that the government ordered Jindal to stop cleaning the mess up ?

Gulf Coast states governors say Federal Government stinks. So much for your rant.

They don't INCLUDE the overheads costs in their calculations.

The large Federal Government screwed up, didn't enforce their regulations and didn't require the normal licensure by BP as is usually required. They failed to react in a timely fashion to this disaster that occurred in federal waters under their jurisdiction. The large Federal Government stopped the states and private industry from clean-up efforts closer to shore and allowed the oil to hit the shorelines while Obama golfed. The large Federal government turned away every offer by allied foriegn governments offering clean-up aid. The large federal government put a nationwide 6 mo. moritorium on drilling while foriegn governments continue to drill in the gulf. They even renigged on permits for riggs they had recently passed on inspection and were unable to justify the revocation under eny explaination other than "what if"... .

How is any of this good? You must be daft!
