I cannot tell you two how refreshing it is to find some common ground with a Dem rather than throw verbal barbs at each other. Thanks for this post and are there more of you?
Yes there are. I don't support spending on most things. Why spending is regarded as liberal is beyond me since it doesn't seem to be all that definitive. All ideologies overspend, they just overspend differently.
I oppose almost all welfare, I oppose military spending (a touchy issue but I'm still cutting costs, aren't I?), and I think any government that spends more than it takes in is just idiotic. Credit is not wealth, why does it have to "run" economies? If you don't have the cash, you don't buy it! At the same time, I do believe in single payer health care and public ownership of things that everyone shares like infrastructure, energy, and utilities. But when it comes to spending, the above rule always applies. I don't care if it puts people on the streets, if our society has any values, they won't be there for long.
As for cutting military spending - no. I would not be for that. I lived in one of the cities that was attacked in 2001. I am not silly enough to think these terrorists are not going to try again. I support our military, and frankly, I would like to see the military hospitals/rehab centers receive MORE of our tax dollars (after we complete the above review in my ideal world!).
I can see a military that defends America, which is what you support.
But I despise that our military being used to constantly stir up foreign hornet's nests of terrorists, thereby massively increasing the risk to Americans on their own home soil. And I am disgusted that politicians send our servicemen and women overseas with restrictions that amount to tying both hands behind their backs.
If you want to take over or destroy a target, send in the military. If you want to "make friends" and create new governments and build nations, then send over several planeloads of politicians. I can't think of a better use for those in Washington now, with the exception of the few Libertarian patriots who should stay and fix what's wrong with our Country's governance.
So you want to take away Social Security, Medicare and school lunches from poor children? Good luck running with that strategy!
Yep-
Without drastic cuts in medicare, social security and cuts in military spending, there will only be money to service the debt and no funds to pay for the above three.
Libs do not seem to realize this-
If we keep spending to the point of insolvency, there will be NO SOCIAL PROGRAMS at all. There will be social anarchy. If we cut now, gain control of the debt, and develop a rational budget, these programs can continue in a scaled down fashion long term.

Exactly liberals don't seem to understand this. What's the point of having these programs now if we can cut them now, and maybe salvage them when we are more fiscally solvent, than spending our way into ruin because my bleeding heart says I should, and then NEVER have any social programs for a long time to come?

My thoughts exactly. I wish there were more of them. If there were and the far right was more flexible, we might actually be able to get things done.

Yes. Phase it all out. You make an excellent point though. If you try to do the right things like this, you probably won't get elected. The media will destroy you.

I'll go one further than you (in the same vein as another thread), seeing that the UN wants to call all the shots and critize just about everything the US does, let THEM send in their "Peacekeeping Forces" rather than our under-paid and weary armed forces.
