Although I would agree that a contract is a contract, I would like to tell Verizon to go to Hell. You don't send an "early termination" bill to a dead Marine's widow unless you have no morals at all. Glad I am not one of their customers (full disclosure - I do work for a competing cellular provider but I am not their customer either).http://cbs13.com/local/marine.widow.verizon.2.1772409.html (broken link)

Sadly, this just doesn't suprise me at all. Verizon is a major sheethole company. I've had to pay those jerks for bills that I never had TWICE! One was for someone with the same name as my wife that lived 500 miles away from where we lived, and another I cancelled the service, had the proof and everything...they still tried to bill me for an extra month, waited over a year to send me the bill and of course added all the obligatory fees and penalties onto the cost of the extra month that I never should have been charged for to begin with.

They are scum, plain and simple.

So if Verizon is scum, which provider isn't? Who would you recommend and why?

Did they know he died? or did they just know he defaulted on a contract?

The man was overseas fighting for our country and lost his life doing so,
The father went on to say that verizon asking them to honor their contract is "unpatriotic."

He's not fighting for our country; he's fighting for corporate interests.
And it's an all volunteer force where they know they're joining up to go into battle, especially the marines.

You can also look at this as they're using the marine's death as a reason to get out of the contract.
After the family went to the media, they blackmailed Verizon to back down.
I can just see this playing out in everything the family does now.

Call me heartless but what does one have to do with the other?

I work closely with most of the communication providers, have many friends who have worked for all of them. I'm not a gadget geek though, so I really don't know much other than I get one that works and keep it.

So honestly I don't have any recommendations. They all pretty much have horrible service. ATT from what I've heard is horrible, Sprint is horrible...It's just one of those industries, they all suck. Super high turnover with their employees, a business model based on squeezing customers out of every nickel and dime they can, offshoring or doing whatever the flavor of the month is to make a bigger profit often at the cost of American jobs and their customers and employees...

Actually, they are quite similar to the big banks.

Is it possible Verizon didn't know? I mean they would have to be notified of his death at somepoint.

Why provide a pass if they don't for everyone whose death is tragic in one form or another? What about a parent with 6 kids who dies of cancer? Is this not tragic, also? What about the coal miners in WV who died by suffocation in their jobs? Aren't they also tragic?

If there's not a death clause in the contract, it's still a contract payable by the estate or take a hit on your credit history and explain it.

I'm not for corporations but I find it disgusting that this family is using their son/husband's death for their personal gain.

"I called them to cancel. I told them the situation with my husband. I even said I would provide a death certificate," Michaela said. Despite the circumstances, Verizon is imposing a $350 early termination fee.

Verizon just made me an enemy for life. Nothing they could do now would make up for treating his widow this way.

Rot in Hell Verizon!

That doesn't surprise me. I work for a Telecommunications company and we have special rules for military families. NO early termination fees, special payment extensions and payment arrangements.
