VIENNA, Va. (AP) - A show of affection almost landed a teenage boy in detention.

Hugging was 13-year-old Hal Beaulieu's crime when he sat next to his girlfriend at lunch a few months ago and put his arm around her shoulder. He was let off with a warning, but the cost of a repeat offence could be detention.

A rule against physical contact at Kilmer Middle School, about 20 kilometres west of Washington, is so strict that students can be sent to the principal's office for hugging, holding hands or even high-fiving.

No-touching policy at Virginia school forbids student hugs, high-fives (broken link)

We had this policy in middle school in Arizona, as well. Don't know why it's making the news like it is.

It's (bad) news because it shows waht educators think is important. We're getting away from academics and putting the focus on stupid things like hugging and high fives. No wonder some people home school, private school, want vouchers etc.

We wonder why our school system is the embarrassment of the western world. The citizens of that school district trust people like that to educate their kids?

Unreal. Absolutely unreal.

Agreed why not spend the time finding weed in the lockers? Another way to get 15 minutes of fame. I can understand if it was makeout central..but this was not. And the high five..since when did a positive gesture beome bad. That was one of the first things I taught my toddler...we play "high five, way up high, down low, tooooo slowwww"

Pretty soon it will be sit down, shut up and do your homework. We didnt move to SC last year because it is one of the few states that allow corporal punishment still.

I had no idea corporal punishment even existed until I learned it from City-Data.

I hope the parents sue...really..waste even more tax payers money see what the school says then.

And yes..being from an asian country background where there is a ton of outsourcing going on, and the americans are paying them for tutoring their kids...in every subject...even English, is an embarassement.

I grew up in this country and had to hear it all time how lax things were...and now that I am parent...I "see" it clearly

Considering the recent climate in the schools I am surprised this “no touching” rule wasn’t directed towards the teachers keeping their hands off the students.

That's fine with me. Kids don't need to touch each other at school. They need to keep their hands to themselves. It's a non-issue as far as I'm concerned.
