Helping the poor is one of the most important things society does. But we do the poor no favors when we promote public policies that perpetuate poverty. This especially applies to the tax system. Take the news last fall that Alabama ranked 50th out of 50 states in terms of state tax rates.

There are so many kinds of taxes its hard to say who really has lower tax rates. For example, in many southern states you have low property tax , but they get you if you own a car or a boat. Other states get you with the gas tax. In NH, where there is no sales tax or state income tax, they tax your property and other assets at a high rate.

Amen! A fact often ignored. Most are just stuck with "income tax" forever without realizing they pay a lot more in various forms of tax. It is also a savior for many politicians, as they preach to the choir who will believe them with no questions asked. To them all, things are for free (or so they believe).

Even frugal, actually penny wise and pound foolish, New Hampshire is having financial difficulties created by trying to pay for Republican programs with Democrats money.

It's because liberalism doesn't work. Never has, never will.

I never saw Arizona as a liberal state. And here in Texas, we pay taxes to pay for roads. Roads are built using (100%) tax payer money, and handed over to private corporations to charge toll and sponsor the politicians back in office. Ask Rick Perry.

Hmm, idk I'll have to disagree. IMO, the states that are being hit the worse right now are states like Arizona, Nevada, Florida, etc. They all tend to have lower taxes. IDK, maybe I'm wrong.

Yep, there are many different types of taxes. Illinois has a (relatively) low income tax at 3%, but when you add in sales, grocery, property, gas, and local taxes it's a heavy burden. Most other states don't even levy tax on groceries, not to mention we've got the highest gas and sales taxes and close to the highest property taxes here. This state has become a democratic craphole and our budget is so out of whack that they're already talking about new ways to boost revenues (read: taxes) and not really looking into cutting spending.

That's what the democrats have been feeding their constituents here for years who want more free services, and the voters just keep eating up the politicians' lies and BS. Meanwhile, in the real world where budgets matter, we've advanced to #8 in the world most likely to default on our debt obligations.

I guess high taxes don't really matter if income is high, too. I read somewhere that Switzerland has extremely high taxes, but people there also earn a lot, so it doesn't really matter...
