I'd like to know the cause of the suicides, I'd be willing to bet that many had to do with troubles with family back home.
From what I've noticed, for some, it's being unable to cope once the adrenaline rush of being deployed is gone.
As part of the redeployment programs, MWR offers diving, white water rafting, skydiving, zip lines and other high adrenaline activities as soldiers settle back in.
Suicides sometimes occur within the first few days of returning from downrange.
I don't know about the suicides being related to family issues (there are no local studies) but there is a lot of family violence in the redeployed soldiers. Even if the family says nothing, the DoDDS teachers are all trained to notice major differences in the students. They, of course, notice the non-verbals because kids are usually too afraid of talking.
No offense Chango, but read the bolded part very, very carefully: THE UNITED STATES SUSPENDED CONSCRIPTION IN 1973. Nobody is forcing them to be there, nobody forced them to join the military. They chose to be there. Period.
No one forced them to sign up, but they ARE forced to stay, and repeatedly go back...
Could you post an excerpt of that article where soldiers are forced to stay?
As to multiple deployments, well that is because there aren't enough troops for the job at hand, seems the military was reduced back in the 1990's.
What a tragedy what we are doing to today's young people. An economy in shambles, few,. if any, jobs available, give them signing bonuses and money for college if they will go into a war zone and risk their life for reasons unclear, on a mission that is unclear, against an "enemy" who is indistinguishable from civilians, and then when civilians are blown to bits, you expect him to live happily ever after.
Of course, like a ticking time bomb, many of these suicides occur when the guilt becomes too much and this being after they are out of uniform or have safely returned from a war zone.
An ongoing national tragedy. And one that, until a few weeks ago, the Veterans Affairs Dept. was in complete denial over. After 9 years of war they finally admitted these soldiers all deserve some kind of help.

You don't just get discharged and that's that... you get put on inactive ready reserves and can still be called up, very much against your will....

How is it against your will when you agreed to it?
When a person enlists,it is clearly spelled out.
