CLEARWATER, Fla., July 18 (UPI) -- A food bank in Clearwater, Fla., distributed a can labeled as a "superfood" that turned out to be a can of dog food, the recipient said.

On Social Security, retired Air Force veteran Frank Viscido made his weekly trip from his home in Largo to the Religious Community Services Food Bank in Clearwater for free food, The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported.

I'm sure there are many Americans (mainly conservatives) who would be fine with this. Their rationale: It teaches people to work harder so they don't have to eat dog food.

Back when I worked at a pet store I would nibble the "Chicken Tenders". They were, essentially chicken jerky and darn tasty. The girls I worked with thought I was a bit odd, but really, they tasted great.

I'm sure that dog food is good. I have often opened a can of "designer" cat food and been tempted to taste it. It looks and smells good. I mean, it is food after all, and certainly no worse than a Big Mac, I'm sure.

If you look at the ingredients of cans of dog or cat food, they are made with an exceptional variety of things. You can get meat, fat, protein, fiber, and other nutrients. Everything is in there. You can often find cans of dog food on sale for $0.50-$1.00. Would it actually be cheaper to live off dog food than "normal" food?

Dog food for dinner? Well, I guess it depends on the flavor. And I'm not too keen on eating anything out of the can, unless I can add rice or something. Maybe I'll just starve, I could always lose a few lbs. anyway.

The label said "Senior Holistic Superfood". The article explains that the charity does not take pet food donations. Obviously, this was a mistake and not some nefarious plot.

Canned dog and cat food as been people quality for decades because the FDA realized that as a grocery store item, the really poor people would be tempted to buy and eat it. And some pet food is higher quality than the average canned people food. One of my dogs eats duck and potato mix food for his allergies. I'd love to live on a duck diet!

And the graphics on the cans of dog and cat food are designed to sell to the people owning their pets. I don't blame that food bank for getting confused and giving it out as people food. Plus, they didn't buy that can of food to give out, it was given to them as a donation.

And those going to food banks could have pets that need to eat also. So this was all an honest mistake.
