So let me get this straight. The OP wants to have a serious discussion about black underachievement with a group of people who know absolutely nothing about minorities other than what they see on tv?
don't be so judgmental. I'm sure all of them have a black friend...or at least work with one
As a minority all I was taught at school was that if you don't excel in sports then you are nothing.
The household is a different story. My family stressed education.

For starters,it is but when a black and a white person have the same job why does the black person on average get paid less?
I have had to deal with racism while obtaining my degree, getting jobs, and keeping them,so its not easy achieving things. I believe the ones who don't try to achieve anything probably got sidelined by racism, who knows? There are countless stories of black professionals who are not practicing their profession because of it.
Nobody is raised that way. How many "minorities" do you know? Education is always stressed in a house hold, whether the kid chooses to listen is another issue.
Nonsense.
You have at least two generations in the black community that have slipped through the cracks, broken homes, teenage parents, illiteracy, low income, drugs, violence, gangs.
How can the kids be expected to excel when the parents can barely read or write?
There is NO support on the home front for a lot of these kids, they just come home to drugs, negligent or absentee parents, abuse (physical and mental).

The Nonsense is you a White person trying to tell me a Black person how things are in the Black community using stereotypes of Black households.

Aside from the OP's insightful statements, this post is spot on.
A better question might be how do we cure American under achievement?
Americans as a whole have developed an entitlment mentality. As if we are all owed a free ride from someone else.
Work in a factory and you see it. At best 10% are over achievers. 50% just do what they need to and stay out of trouble. The rest? Slackers who whine and complain.
Its not just a black problem.
Why is it always underachieving black? Why can't a thread be, "how can we cure underachievement?"
I'm not even going to attempt to read up on this thread or the many programs folks say are needed. Learning always starts at home, always. We learn to cry for milk (some never rid themselves of this one), we learn to have mommy/daddy wipe our asses (ditto) when we crap in our pants.
PARENTS are the single most influence in a child’s ability or inability to learn. Educate children so that when they are PARENTS they teach their children rather than expect schools to teach them what they should be learning at home. Parents should teach responsibility and consequences. If parents did, they, the children, would have a better understanding of the purpose of schools and have respect for others which in turn results in respect for themselves. My plight is in vein because as we all know people just keep getting lazier.

I work in the school system and I know for a fact that parents push education...whether they have been or crack or not, whether the child is in foster care...what have you. The parents want their child to have an education, and are trying to do everything they can to get them a good education.
The waiting lists for charter schools in Philadelphia are through the roof.
