Republicans delay vote on U.S. jobless benefits | Reuters

"This latest move gives the partisan minority 30 more hours to stall in the Senate, but that means 30 more hours of suffering for these hard-working families trying to get by," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.
Can't they just make those getting unemployment work some hours for the gov for jobs that are needed. How about garbage man litter disposal, or something like that. Internships etc paid with unemployment then. They must be required to work at least part time in jobs they dont want.

If they go past the deadline for unemployment insurance force them to do those jobs.
Done at least they are forced to do something.

The Democrats are privately thanking the GOP for handing them a campaign issue in November.

Intentionally not complying with their own rule of paygo is a political chess move, pretty smart one too. Republicans know their supporters would not want their party representatives to support Krugman-esque and moronic spendthrift policies. Therefore, cornering Reps by making them look like they don't care about the out of work folks is the strategy at hand. Americans have a fairly spendthrift policy for much of their finances, so I suppose the culture is that "what the h*ll, go for broke". Having to follow Paygo is not an issue with bleeding heart independents.

The Democrats are still the party of NO with PayGo.

What would that be? Thousands without jobs is not a good story. Helping people out of work without saying how it will be paid for is stupid.

Yep.. but I dont need to agree with the law in order to be forced to comply with it. They didnt support the law, but they do have to follow it.. Democrats though think they are exempt, they havent followed the rule ONCE since passing it, but I guarantee you they will be whining and crying if/when Republicans violate paygo

Yeah, this might be a good reason for the Democrats, the party of NO on PayGo, to reconsider their decision...

I'm not sure of the state, i think it was New Jersey, but the unemployment compensation was something like the equivalent of working a 40 hour week at $15/hour.... and now its $15/hour for 2 1/2 years.

Has Gibbs or any other Democrat--either in Congress or the White House, including Obama--ever explained why they could not use the unspent TARP or stimulus funds to pay for this extension? If they have I haven't heard it. Think about it: the Republicans were prepared to vote for the extension, provided it was paid for. The money is there (borrowed, to be sure). So who, ultimately, is to blame for the fact that 2.5 million people lost their UE benefits a month ago?

I'd like an answer to that, too.
