You claim to know "sure as heck" it wasn't Mark Twain. I'd be interested in just exactly how you arrived at that conclusion since apparently the author has never been determined.
I thought the quote went "...and need to be changed often for the same reason." or something along those lines. Leaving the reader to figure the 'crap' part out on their own.
