Your quote....I feel the opposite. We are not isolated. How could we be?

I taught American Government for over 25 years in high school and I made sure that we always had a complete unit on communism and socialism. I knew enough about communism to talk those kids into believing it might just work but always made sure that they heard some of the truths about how theories usually don't work and that this one had never established anything but dictatorship. It doesn't take long to educate people about this kind of thing if you first get them to thinking it is GOOOOOOD and then hit them with the real truth of the theory.

I read in that thread where all the very young communist thinkers were playing around yesterday and got sick. Governmental theories are just theories until they are used and work out and communism has never worked out. It sounds so good to people who don't have much and too often they never manage to get back to the real world.

Thank you and thank you for having one of the toughest jobs out there--Teaching

MOgal - I thought I was paranoid! Besides I think your greatest fear may provide a better and more prosperous for everybody than having our country run by a few financial corporation’s for their own benefit.

Communism does not work even with a dictatorial government. Socialism is a logical outcome of a Democracy where the majority actually does rule. Our form of polluted crony capitalism only works for the few at the top that own the resources and the government.

Communism in the past and Islamic fundamentalism are just excuses to keep funding the military contractors that are ripping us off and the big industries that are on industrial welfare. When it comes to military contracting we might as well be communist.

These two sentences make it pretty obvious that you don't really know what the left has fed you and you digested. The last sentence is too ignorant of the truth for me. You talk about big corporations calling the shots and then say we might as well be communist because of what they do.

I use the word ignorant merely to show that you are blowing off corporatism as dictatorial and then end up by saying that communism is the same thing. Which twist do you want to accept as your own?

I have studied the early days of attempts to install communism as well as the origination of the theory and won't soon stop being afraid of it. I know that the belief in the theory is not dead and especially in the US. I do believe that communists love to hear people talk about their idea being dead because that makes it easier for them to wriggle back in. Does this tell you why this old conservative is afraid of communism and what it will bring?

1. We are a representative Republic, not a Democracy.

2. It is not just polluted crony capitalism but unethical elected representatives looking out for their self interest and political carrers before their sworn oaths to uphold the Constitution and defend it from enemies both foreign and domestic.

3. At present our military is comprised of people who serve by choice, huge difference between that and communist/dictatorship run military. I doubt many communist/dictator run military branches sub-contract to private firms. In addition, all funding for the US military is approved through Congress after being reviewed and submitted by appropriations committees. Again, not likely under communism or dictatorships.

Since as you agree it hardly exists anymore and has been proven to not be sustainable, why are you all so afraid it's about to spring back to life any second?

As a history teacher, you know the history of the communist movement in the US -- international events, domestic economic influences that created it. What factors are in place now that make you afraid of communism coming back? This is the most capitalist country on earth.

And is it communism, or totalitarianism you mean?

It can't be totalitarianism that they are afraid of.

Many of the same people who decry socialism are the exact same ones who want government imposed morality and strict laws governing behaviors in accordance with the “common good”.

Basically it boils down to they don't want to pay taxes, but will bend over for the government when the government tries to tell them how they should live their lives.
