So yes, the people there, at least where she grew up, referred to black people as ******s, not as a derogatory term, but because that's what they thought black Americans called themselves. When she came here my friend had to quickly inform her that it wasn't socially acceptable to call black people that here.

Which is sadly ironic because ******s is what Filipinos were called by US Army Soldiers during the Philippine American War.
There are black people in the Philippines, the aboriginal Aetas of Luzon. Known to Tagalogs disparagingly as "Baluga".
They use the word "Itim" for African Americans. It just means "black" but can be derogatory.
