I always donate to this organization. They actually seem "real" rather than proclaiming to help when so little is done.

To the OP: I'm not sure how it works in other states, but in Florida most of our counties have a Veterans Services department. This is the purpose according to the website for the Orlando area:
Provides assistance to all former or present members of the Armed Forces of the United States, their spouse and/or their dependents in preparing claims for compensation, hospitalization, vocational training and other benefits to which they are entitled.

Check your area for this veterans' assistance agency.
