"With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million, it will mark the inauguration of the nation's most expensive public school ever. The K-12 complex to house 4,200 students has raised eyebrows across the country as the creme de la creme of "Taj Mahal" schools, $100 million-plus campuses boasting both architectural panache and deluxe amenities. The RFK complex follows on the heels of two other LA schools among the nation's costliest — the $377 million Edward R. Roybal Learning Center, which opened in 2008, and the $232 million Visual and Performing Arts High School that debuted in 2009."

LA unveils $578M school, costliest in the nation - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100822/ap_on_re_us/us_taj_mahal_schools - broken link)

So, the districts want a showpiece for the community...

This is the state that about not having enough money, having to lay off people and always looking for all of us in the other states to pay for its excesses with federal money when it's going broke and can't meet its budget.

Maybe its time for the feds to say, "Go blank yourself, California!"

I read that story, too. And this is not Beverly Hills or Malibu that is throwing, excuse me, investing, in the school. That is over $135K per student. In my District, where they spend about $10,000 per student, that is like 13 years of funding, before they even spend a nickel on teacher salaries or building maintenance. On the bright side, it did keep some construction workers employed for a while.

It's not a "California" issue it's a LAUSD issue.

In Los Angeles, officials say the new schools were planned long before the economic pinch and are funded by $20 billion in voter-approved bonds that do not affect the educational budget.
That's how it was done.

Your location field says Tennessee. According to the nice people at the Tax Foundation, Tennessee has been a net drain on the Federal coffers since - well, forever - where California is a net contributor.

Since 2000, for each dollar Tennessee puts in the Federal collection platter, the state has taken out between $1.20 and $1.25. Since 2000, California has gotten between 81 and 78 cents on the dollar.

Perhaps California would have more cash if the good folks in Tennessee started paying their own way? As for who should go blank themselves, well...

Prince George's County, MD spent $120M on a 3000 student high school opened 5 years ago. Calvert County, MD opened up an $85M high school for 1500 students about the same time. Property costs drive up the cost, as do the amenities the parents want. The second one I mentioned had a large community push for a pool. It didn't happen but the County just opened up a community pool a couple months ago ($24M).
Businesses demand the equipment be the most up to date (it then becomes obsolete and isn't replaced when it should be) for their future workers, daycare may be provided for children of students, etc.
CA has some pretty stringent building codes that add to the cost, too.
