Because US Military sends people where they need them not where the soldiers want! He knew this when he volunteered!
He said it himself. When he volunteered he thought he could reconcile military and Islam, but he has since found out he can't.
Why doesn't he just leave the military altogether now?
I like that guy, he has a backbone

The FACT I stated, that there is historical precedent for the military excusing personnel from certain missions for religious reasons. Maybe if you weren't so quick to start your whiney name-calling BS you'd possibly understand that.

IMO if he wants to leave the military they better put him to pay back all the money they spent with him.

Yes, but back then the people were drafted... they did't volunteered! If you know that your religious beliefs don't go well with the military life then don't volunteer! (and saying that you didn't know exactly before you got in how's the military life indicates ignorance and stupidity)

The two I knew enlisted.
Do you really believe 20 year olds know much about anything?
it's called a conscientious objector and it has gone on in every deployment. Why does anyone think his religious choices should not be honored?... We have freedom of religion as long as you don't choose Islam... doesn't work that way.
Simply deploy him else where. there are many choices, why make a big deal of this?
If any of these posters had strong religious values perhaps you might not like being deployed to a project that caused undue harm and misery for mostly innocent people. Perhaps it is this lack of value that allows for comments of "firing squad" that certainly isn't an American value, nor a Christian one.

Aone, I'd like to weigh in as a USAF veteran. I hear ya on the religious freedom in the military. And, yes, Conscientious Objector status is still considered on a case-by-case basis. Most likely that process will be invoked in this soldier's case. But he must also live with the findings. Whether it be a discharge, return to service or some other administrative actions. There may be repayment of training costs and/or enlistment bonuses, as well.
But the fact is, he enlisted on a voluntary basis. And as an active duty military member, must be deployable anywhere in the world. There are a number of reasons for this. To permit servicemembers to deploy only where their religious beliefs allow would be an assignments office and logistical nightmare. And imagine that you had to deploy far sooner to a combat zone because there were others who would not deploy due to religion. Not fair at all.
