I was wondering if certain states that are politically entrenched whether it be left or right wouldnt be better off peacefully seceding from the union and going it alone or with a like minded group of states, sounds like it would be preferable to the eternal bickering and fighting that seems is only going to get worse as time goes on and may lead to violent secession.
Be kinda tranquil living in a place where every one shares the same political ideology.
I suppose an easier way would be to turn off the TV and stop visiting the political sections of forums

Didnt mean to give the impression that Americans should consider moving to Somalia just seceding from the current Union of states that is America, the right can have their own little countries with no government and the left can have their little countries with big governments,of course some may want to move if they are living in a predominantly left wing area and they tend to prefer right wing ideology's and vica versa, end result?= every one is happy?.

How long before China or Russia to overtake the leftie side . Then the Southwest (Rightie side) would have to help.
We will never be parted , even if we wanted to.

Seems to me the righty side and all their big business interests have sold America to China some time ago,So thanks for the offer but in a sectioned off America we'll take care of our own lefty business any way we see fit.
And you are right i cant see where America will ever break up as it would take all the fun out of the constant bitching and whining.

What may be a strong state in the union would quickly become a weak nation outside of the union. There's no way any state would secede, no matter the grievance. They have too much of a good thing going as a member of our federation.

NE/SE/NW/SW?

Kinda like the North vs the South was, isn't it? Just different specific issues, but it was about stomping on the Constitution of The United States of America, like it is now.

There wouldn't necessarily be any border checkpoints. An independent New York and, say, whatever country New Jersey belonged to post-secession would have at least as much in common as, say, Germany and Austria, where - being members of the EU and the Schengen Area, have nothing more than "Welcome to Austria" and "Welcome to Germany" signs at their borders. No checkpoints at all.

One could easily imagine a close EU-type association between a sovereign New York and the country containing New Jersey.

Besides, even in the absence of such an association, there are American and Canadian schoolchildren who cross an international border every day to go to school. No big deal -- when you do it every day the process can be expedited.

No, it wasn't - it was about the election of a President that the South was convinced (without warrant, as it happened) was going to ban slavery.

South Carolina (the first state to secede) states its justification for secession (12/24/1860):
Avalon Project - Confederate States of America - Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union
Number of times the phrase slaveholding states appears - 5
Number of times the word slaves appears - 5
Number of times the word slavery appears - 6
Number of times the word slave appears - 2

Ditto Mississippi:
[from the second sentence of the ordinance of secession]
Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth.
Declaration of Causes of Secession

Ditto Georgia:
[again, from the second sentence]
For the last ten years we have had numerous and serious causes of complaint against our non-slave-holding confederate States with reference to the subject of African slavery.
Declaration of Causes of Secession

Ditto Texas:
[impressively, Texas managed to get to the fifth sentence before identifying slavery as their reason for seceding]
She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time.
Declaration of Causes of Secession

The Civil War was all about the desire of Southern states to preserve the right to enslave human beings. And the seceding states declared that publicly for all the world to see.

Yes, slavery was very wrong, racism is wrong. One comes from the other and visa-versa.

The thing is, our Constitution did not have the power to go where it went. The States before that time had more power than the government, that's way it is suppose to be. Each State was an experiment for social and economic prosperity or failure. The States competed for citizens. If you didn't like what was going on, you went where you liked it and were able to provide for your family.

Eventually, Slavery would have ended all on it's own, within local communities. The story of Moses is pretty well known to those crazy religious people.(most everyone was religious, then)

The way it did end, created resentment from both sides of the issue, that lasts to this day in the form of racism.

I don't think any state will ultimately choose to secede from the United States of America. Many states would want to secede from the Peoples States of America, but the recurring miracle of Election Day will keep us from continuing down the path towards that. Election Day 2010 will turn out to be the people's revenge on Congressmen who trample on the will of the people.
