I do not believe that the Victorians had computers, TV's, air conditioning, washers, dryers, dish washers, DVD players, stereos, video games, technology that needed charging, vacuum cleaners, hair blowers, electric garage doors, etc. So as horrible as the use of whale oil was from an ecological and humane standpoint, there was never a need for the amount of oil that we greedily demand nowadays.

The good news is, no one died, only 1 injury, everyone rescued from the water, rig only 340 feet deep as opposed to 5,000 feet, and all the wells have been shut off.

Link to prove the difference between 10 yrs. ago and today? Please also show the amount of agricultural goods produced by the USA (in terms of energy used) and shipped to 3rd world countries compared to the other large nation consumers of energy. Thank you.
We'll put it in a graph, and going with the notion that the larger the population (in this instance that would be # of years) the more accurate the statistics.
From 1949 to 2009, primary energy consumption in the United States nearly tripled. In all but 16 of those years, primary energy consumption increased over the previous year. Energy consumption fell in 2008 and 2009. (remember those gas prices in 2008?) Plus, the GDP fell 2% in 2009.
It's probably more likely that two year decrease was due to high prices for 2008 followed by severe economic downturn vs. volutary energy conservation because of concern for the future of our planet.
Decreases in total transportation sector consumption in 2008 and 2009 marked the first time since 1990 and 1991 that consumption in this sector has fallen in consecutive years. Within the sector, petroleum consumption fell by 4% in 2009 from 2008, while biofuels consumption rose by 11%.
As you can tell, 08' and 09' are outliers. If a long term trend were to develop then we'd have to re-think that position.
This couldn't of came at a better time for Obama. Now the opposition cannot use "Obama shut down the other oil rigs in the Gulf, stopping hard working Oil workers from working tactic" during November elections. What are the odds of something like this happening so close to the other disaster? All of the other wells in the Gulf need to be checked thoroughly or all life in the Gulf will be dead soon.
I bet Obama want to say "I told you so!"
