As one of the guilty parties, I will offer a partial apology because I should have just ignored the thread completely. There isn't a bit of information that you have gotten here that you couldn't have gotten with a minute of Googling. You shouldn't have been derided for not knowing but instead for just being lazy.

to those of you who were condiscending and have an attitude, to put down someone b/c they asked a question, I say, who do you think you are, berating someone who didn't have as much information as you do...
excuse me, but it's very sad, that so many people can be so hateful...and down right mean....but then, it's so easy to take out your frustrations on someone you don't have to look at in the face...or should I say, bully....no wonder kids have the attitudes they have today, with people like you as parents...? You don't know me from Adam, and yet, you get some sort of distorted satisfaction out of berating another human being....?
You came to an internet message board all drama-fied about the Embassy.
If you have enough smarts to figure out how to surf the world wide web, how about doing some preliminary googling before you get worked up? You have access to just as much information as most people here ... use it or risk some eye-rolls.
Because if you did, you would've seen that this was reported on for YEARS.

About all I ever saw on the internet came from lefties shooting their arrows at Bush. I wonder why they didn't try to get their Congress to impeach him for this after they took over in 2007?

Golly, apologize for being an a**hole and then come back being an a**hole. Come on and just admit to being that to the next person and then let it ride.
I was so proud of you for apologizing and should have stayed away from the end of your post like many do.

Too true.
The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he never would be found out. ~Thomas Babington Macaulay
Just try to ignore those who respond to questions with sarcasm, etc.
104 acres of security and fun in a war zone. Wow. America didn't free the Iraqis as much as they built a symbol for their imperialism for the wretched souls of their aggression to see every day. What? You say there's a horde of people carrying torches and guns heading this way? What's that hiss, is that an incoming missile? Bye bye Americans. You will receive back what was done in your name.
And yes, this is old news. But age has not diminished my outrage and it shouldn't be an excuse for forgetting.
Just spoke with a coworker who grew up in Guatamala in the 70s and 80s...same reports...all the American kids hung out together in country club style embassy...
it is a huge US Embassy in Bagdad, the largest Embassy in the world
office for up to 1600 people, indoor swimming pool, costs to date, over 700 million and still going strong, in the center of Bagdad no less, where it could be bombed???????
They call it a fortress, 27 buildings over 400 acres...
Plus Congress says it will cost more then 200 million dollars a year to operate it????????
It is kinda old news and yeah, it was started under Bush or earlier. It'll be manned by 50,000 troops remaining in Iraq, under the Sec of State.... Hilary's Army
Here's a PDF report...

Construction of the New Embassy Compound (NEC) in Baghdad is completed and,
as of early August 2008, about 50% of post staff have moved in. Construction problems
and additional requirements, including adding space at the embassy compound for
General Patraeus and his staff, as requested in a mid-2007 report by State’s then-
Director of Management and Planning, delayed the opening by a year and raised the cost
from the original $592 million estimate to about $736 million. The Department of State
has a goal of having all U.S. government personnel moved in by the end of 2008.
