Well usually...the point of advertising...is to sell a product. This commercial is right out of advertising 101; they're using emotion as a hook, the gesture created feel-good thoughts and the fact that they only showed it once (because they didn't want to profit from this horrible tragedy) of course makes it even more popular because now people are saying "did you see the Budweiser commercial" Those who missed it will be on Youtube within minutes trying to find it, they'll forward it to other people and for a few moments Budweiser is on everybody's mind. It's advertising gold.
Advertising is a form of communication intended to persuade an audience (viewers, readers or listeners) to purchase or take some action upon products, ideals, or services. It includes the name of a product or service and how that product or service could benefit the consumer, to persuade a target market to purchase or to consume that particular brand.

That means the ad worked. I wonder which agency made it? Props to them and the copywriter, they make the guys on "Mad Men" look like amateurs.

I agree that an adverstisement is meant to generate sales (obviously). But I believe that Big Business Haters go a bit far by extrapolating from this ad that Budweiser was only in it for the money.

Bravo to Bud and any other company that brings 9/11 and our servicemen to the front and center of our minds no matter what the motive might be.

Yes. This.

The ad was only aired once. During half time and never aired again. Budweiser spent millions for only 30 seconds of air time.

Why would it be odd for a company to show their respect for those who lost their lives on 9/11/2001.

So companies cannot make something that will gain them nothing?

Budweiser has always put humor into many of their commercials; this is one of the few where they place their humanity into it.

There was nothing in that commercial that screams out "BUY OUR BEER" - it was a highly paid public service ad.

Of course it worked. I doubt there's anyone who could watch the commerical and not feel something. I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. I believe the agency that did this was out of Chicago, but I don't remember the name.

Yeah, I can just hear the conversation in the Ad agency on Madison Avenue. "Hey, let's throw together some corny ad honoring 9/11. The gullible suckers will get all teary-eyed, and think we care more about the dead than about our profits, and our sales will skyrocket. Jeez, this is like taking candy from a baby. Just like that killer Mother's Day campaign, when people thought we loved our moms so much, they ran out to fill the car with sixpacks."

When you see Monsanto and Dupont and BP and Cargill ads, beating their chests about what fabulous environmental and humanitarian citizens they are, you believe that, too, don't you?

And how do you know it is not? You don't your view is based on opinion just like mine but I feel that any positive attention brought to the 9/11 victims is not a bad thing.

Oh I felt something but it was most certainly was NOT "oh hey I want a beer".
