The NBER uses GDP figures alone to determine when a recession begins or ends. Which makes sense - a recession is after all defined by two consecutive quarters of contraction in GDP. However it completely omits the indicators that actually matter to the average person, primarily the unemployment rate. Plus, just because the overall GDP increases does not mean that all regions of the country are experiencing growth, especially when overall growth was less than 2% this year (3% is average).
