Assuming that you are correct, and that only people who pay taxes or fees are entitled to basic services, like fire or police, it's classless to mock someone who just lost their home, and it's even worse when the mocking is of their accent. Frankly it's disgusting, but I'll chalk it up to him relapsing and being drunk and high.
Ya, so much for restoring honor. Would an honorable man mock someone who'd just suffered the loss of his house and pets to a fire? Not in my book.

Take it another step farther and what if there was a clerical error in recording who paid and who didn't and they let your house burn down after you'd had paid? The system they have in place sucks. In one county near where I live they charge you $500 if they need to come put out a fire but they put it out even if you can't pay on the spot.

The contempt that some of you have for your fellow citizens and for humanity in general is just mind-boggling. You are truly cold-hearted and cruel.
I agree. I can't imagine what this country will be like if too many of these anti-government types get in power.
Yesterday on his radio show, Beck and Gray not only defended the fire department's refusal to save the Cranick's house, but they also accused Cranick of "sponging" off his neighbors -- all the while mocking and ridiculing Cranick's rural accent. He said Cranick was "sponging" off his neighbors.
Someone noted in the comments section after the HuffPo article that it is exactly this sort of behavior that contributes to bullying in this country. How are kids supposed to believe that it is wrong to ridicule and harass people when we have someone that millions of people look up doing that very thing on a national stage. And he has the nerve to pretend to be a Christian?????
After this stunt, there isn't a single thing that anyone could say that would make me change my mind about this man's lack of credibility or the damage he is doing to this nation.
I understand that small fire dept are fighting for survival I am small town raised. So is every one else in this economy. Not a good enough reason not to put out the fire and there needs to be a plan for just this scenario.
Now now this lady will get her insurance, that will raise the neighbors rates. If she has no insurance she goes on emergency welfare that costs the county even more.
If you don't like my idea that's fine but offer another one that can work, the way it sits now it clearly dose not. One of those dogs could easily have been a grand child. Price that at 75 bucks.
If one of those dogs had been a grandchild, then the firefighters would have risked their lives to save that child's life. They are quite clear about that. The policy always included interceding in life-threatening situations.
If this lady has insurance, she'll be recompensed for her loss. If she doesn't, why would she go on welfare? How would she qualify for welfare now, when she didn't before? People will most likely pitch in, offering clothes and household items. And it was a trailer she was living in, wasn't it? It's not like she has to wait on a new house to be built, she only has to wait on the new trailer to be delivered.
I don't see a problem with the fee as it is to directed to people that don't give into that tax pool. How ever there needs to be an adequate answer when a home is on fire that allows the fire to be put out and back charge them.
hell we have late fees for library books that you don't pay until you want a book. No reason not to put out a fire.
In fact it's an arsonists dream. The arson investors are paid by the fire dept not the Sheriff. Burn the house, no fire fighter, no investigation, get the insurance.
You think the volunteer fire department has an arson investigator? Ummm, I don't think so. There is probably an arson investigator in Union City who would investigate, and then send a bill to the county.
Everyone said the homeowner wouldn't get money from his insurance because he didn't pay the $75...well he is getting the full amount.
BTW, once again, the fire had not yet reached the home when the FD got there. All they had to do was spray the ground. NO ONE is getting hurt doing that.
"Everyone" didn't say that. A couple of posters said that.
This is generally "local" news, and has been thoroughly covered by area stations. The poor guy just forgot to pay the $75...clearly he earned having his life ruined. He offered the FF who arrived to safeguard his neighbors' homes and fields $500 cash, and still they refused to help because it was "too late." People seem to have lost all sense of compassion.
He didn't forget, he didn't pay, they actually assisted him ONCE! They sent him 2 reminders, they called him up, and he TOLD reporters that he DIDN'T pay because he thought they would respond anyways.
He was already told once, they wouldn't respond again unless he paid the REQUIRED fee negotiated by his municipality to received fire department services from the 8 surrounding municipalities.

This is a moral issue at its core. Do not compare getting fined for not having auto insurance to a house going up in flames with who knows what left inside. This guy does have fire insurance and obviously paid his premium as he is getting reimbursed, but a fire department and fire fighters should not be reduced to invoice checking before putting out a fire. Whatever system that is in place in this city is extremely flawed.
This is why our healthcare system does not work. Too many deadbeats showing up at the emergency room and giving fake names and addresses to avoid paying their bills aftewards.
The CORRECT thing to do was for the fire department to extinguish the fire and then send the homeowner a bill for the entire cost to the department. A lien could be put on the home to prevent the homeowner from skipping out on paying.
........., and he TOLD reporters that he DIDN'T pay because he thought they would respond anyways..
This says it all. He wanted others to pay but he still expected it to free for himself.
