How about this:

A cop is walking his beat on the streets of "City A" and see's a tourist that comes from "City B" getting beaten up by a thug. The cop knows that the person from "City B" doesn't pay taxes to "City A", so therefore the cop stands there and watches the person get beaten.

SAME SITUATION!!!

What a great story of penny wise and pound poor. What a foolish old man.
Now why in the hell they could not have just put it out and then charged him $750 or $7500 for the service is beyond me.

You might be a Redneck if the fire department watches your house burn down because you didn't pay $75.00.

Fires spread quickly. They probably showed up to protect the property of those who paid the 75.00/yr and who have the misfortune of living next to a boneheaded cheapskate who thinks he knows it all and you probably cannot tell him anything.

The house in question wasn't in the city. The owner paid no taxes for this service. He had the option to contract for this service, but made the choice to save the $75 per year. Seems he made a bad decision.

They don't have an area, they have residents who are members of their fire prevention service.

Yup, basically he opted out of the $75.00 insurance fee for fire protection. Sometimes a garden hose is not enough to get the job done. Ever wonder why so many folks out in rural areas have a pond out behind their house? It is for the pumper trucks to get water to put out a house/barn fire.

That was why we were to respond to this kind of situation. Also, it typically isn't know if the house in question is covered until after the firefighters are toned out. They have to respond under the assumption that it is until things are sorted out.

75 bucs a year is cheap for fire protection, but I doubt this is their only source of funding. Usually they get grants from federal, state and local governments.

Nope, it's a membership system because the area can't afford to support a tax based system probably because of all the rural outlying areas.

No, they must serve the taxpayers, not "everyone", especially not those outside of the taxing district. It's not fair to the taxpayers if they serve those that did not pay, either by taxes or the contract fee.
