Yes but I don't think they were "guards" but "gangs". Kidnapping in Mexico isn't really news because usually they just want ransom money. Phoenix, Arizona also gets a lot of that.

BBC News - Armed gang 'kidnaps 20 Mexican tourists in Acapulco'

Apparently they were taken to Michoacan. It's best to stay out of the states of Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Chihuahua and probably Durango and Sonora.

The Associated Press: 22 kidnapped in Mexican resort city of Acapulco

According to this source the "tourists" were from Michoacan in the first place - 22 of them - I would guess they are one family and were targetted, not just some average tourists, except it's weird that one family member went to the police.
