Someone showed up in the evening yesterday, and identified himself as being with Working America. He asked for me by name, then asked what my top priority was for the election and who I was going to vote for in the Reid/Angle race. He then asked for my girlfriend by name, and asked the same questions.

The only reason I answered him was because I hadn't heard of the organization before - I never would have helped him by answering had I known he was from a union org. We had someone similar come by last week, too. We also had a guy show up before the 2008 election and actually ARGUED with me about Obama - way to promote your candidate, right?

So WTF is a UNION doing with our names and our address? How did they get them? My best guess is that they got the info from our voting registrations, on which we're both registered as Libertarians. They must see us as independents, and our votes as quite valuable in this very tight race.

We also had someone show up last week at 9:30 PM selling his religion. Nine-thirty at night!!!

So last night the sign went up. I'm sick of this crap, and I expect that it's only going to get worse until after the election. The next person that knocks on our door soliciting anything - money, our opinion, our eternal soul - is going to catch a MAJOR ration of s**t. I've had it with these clowns.

Can you say the city directory? It's public record. They're doing neighborhood canvassing. The other point--it wasn't "the AFL-CIO." It was a community organizing group that they've evidently set up (not funded with union dues from any of the unions in the AFL-CIO--funded with voluntary contributions) that's attempting to educate local communities about issues important to working people, encourage them to vote, etc. Read the 'about me" link on their site.

What "city directory" are you talking about? I think you're confused... or clueless... or both...

Most communities have a city directory that you can purchase. It lists households by address, including names of occupants. Call the city and ask--our town has one. It's all public record.

By the way--no need to be insulting just because it's doubtful that theres a massive left wing conspiracy to find your address and where you live. Sorry to burst your dreams.

It is called canvassing. All campaigns do it. They get your name and address off the voter rolls which are public information. They then send volunteers out to knock on doors and/or make phone calls to identify voters who are sympathetic to their cause or candidate. Then, on election day, they try to make sure those voters get to the polls or they help them fill out papers for an absentee ballot. I canvassed for Obama. Usually the campaigns have rules that they don't knock on doors after dark and they don't call after 9PM because they don't want to **** off voters. And they should not argue with you either. They are not there to convince you just to find out if you plan to vote their way. It is a very effective method of getting out the vote.

Shouldn't have been so nasty in the forum. Soon you'll get the free pampers in the mail.

All the campaigns I have been involved with use the voter rolls. Using a phone directory would be a waste of time. We only want people who can vote. Anybody can buy the registered voter rolls from the county- usually it is sold in both paper and CD ROM form.
