This article is over 10 years old and sadly there is little evidence that Zhang He sailed to America. I don't doubt that he did myself, he certainly had the ships and the know how, but he likely sailed and moved on without leaving behind a "paper trail".
Besides, the Polynesians likely beat the Chinese to the Americas by 200 years.
Because he was an explorer who braved real danger in order to achieve a purpose he believed was of benefit to his people.
Columbus was a Genoese sailor working for the Spanish Crown. He had no people, and the only person Columbus cared about and was looking to benefit, was himself.
He opened the door to what would become or modern day world.
Sure, someone else would have, but they did not, it was him.
