I'm sorry I am so ignorant of history. It must be those inferior schools I went to.

I do think that Columbus day has become meaningless. I guess that it will be impossible to get it repealed, however.
I move we rename it Rush Limbaugh day.

Considering another scenario where an explorer like Zheng He discovers the Americas (for those in the Eastern hemisphere) and sets in motion development from the Chinese model I'm glad it was Cristoforo that got here first.

This article is over 10 years old and sadly there is little evidence that Zhang He sailed to America. I don't doubt that he did myself, he certainly had the ships and the know how, but he likely sailed and moved on without leaving behind a "paper trail".

Besides, the Polynesians likely beat the Chinese to the Americas by 200 years.

Colombus never set foot in the 50 states.
Because he was an explorer who braved real danger in order to achieve a purpose he believed was of benefit to his people.

Columbus was a Genoese sailor working for the Spanish Crown. He had no people, and the only person Columbus cared about and was looking to benefit, was himself.

He opened the door to what would become or modern day world.

Sure, someone else would have, but they did not, it was him.
