Heh, just heard this on the radio and looked in vain for a link.
We seem to be rapidly moving from 'green shoots!'to 'just shoot me'

Why don't you take a guess of how many people die each day in the USA.

Then take a guess at how long it is before the death is reported to the SSA or other federal government agencies.

You will find out that 72,000 covers a very short time and that the number is not that great.

If you can figure a way to make things get reported quicker, then have at it.

You've got a little over a week. Then there will be another 70,000.

How many retired people die a year? The % that 72,000 makes up might surprise even you.

So we should just chalk it up as bad timing ?
Just like we chalked up people in jail getting first time home buyer credits ?
Just like we chalked up multiple people putting in home buyer credits for the same home ?

Just like we chalk up every other government faux pas ?
Didn't we hire like 3-4 million just to administer that stimulus ?

24,53,000 deaths in 2007. Closest I could find
Of Course you must consider that all these people did not die at the same time of year and to say that 72k people died between the issuing of the stimulus and the receiving is facticous

http://www.census.gov/compendia/stat...es/10s0078.pdf

But the $4.3 million to over 17,000 prison inmates is harder to explain

There is a system that Funeral homes how use to repoort deaths of individuals. When my mother in law died a week before her SS was due it notified them and no check was issued to the bank. Governamnt can't bascially do it but they can receive it;it seems.

They are "retired" criminals ?
It was SSA that reported it.

How many days does it take to get a death reported to the federal government.

2 days? 2 weeks? 2 months?

72000 is 10 to 12 days of deaths.

Since they didn't say what they ment by the term prison (federal, state, county), thousands enter some sort of incarnation every day. The articles statement was very open ended, without a breakdown.

But in a fuller article:

Most of the inmates, it turns out, were eligible to get the payments because they were newly incarcerated and had been receiving Social Security before they were locked up.

Many of the payments to dead people were sent because the death was recent, and the Social Security office was not informed of the death in time.

or your can read the report (http://www.ssa.gov/oig/ADOBEPDF/A-09-10-11017.pdf (broken link))

More outrage for outrages sake.
